Required practicals: what tutoring can support
AQA states that questions drawing on required-practical knowledge account for at least 15% of the overall marks. Good support should therefore cover more than the names of experiments: learners need to understand variables, controls, method choices, calculations, graphs, anomalous results, conclusions, limitations and improvements.
AQA GCSE Biology includes ten required practical activities. Three are identified as Biology-only; the remaining seven are shared with AQA Combined Science specifications. Tutoring can reinforce the method, theory, data and written-exam questions, but it cannot replace carrying out the practical activities or the school or centre’s practical-science responsibilities.
- Microscopy of plant and animal cells
- Shared with Combined Science; includes magnification and scale.
- Antiseptics or antibiotics and bacterial growth
- Biology-only practical, including zones of inhibition.
- Osmosis in plant tissue
- Shared; includes percentage mass change and graph work.
- Food tests
- Shared; tests for carbohydrates, lipids and proteins.
- pH and amylase
- Shared; includes sampling, rates and graphing.
- Light intensity and photosynthesis
- Shared; includes rate and graph work, with Higher-tier proportional reasoning where relevant.
- Human reaction time
- Shared practical, with attention to variables, repeats and data.
- Light or gravity and germinated seedlings
- Biology-only practical.
- Ecological sampling
- Shared; includes quadrats, transects, means and sampling principles.
- Temperature and decay of fresh milk
- Biology-only practical, using pH change as an indicator.
