Choose a small connected set
Pick a few facts from one useful family, such as 2, 4 and 8 or 3, 6 and 9. Avoid testing every table at once.

Switch the factors, double a known fact, find the next multiple or connect multiplication with division. For example, use 4 × 6 to help with 8 × 6.

Place the small set into “secure”, “nearly secure” and “not yet secure”. Keep the categories private and practical; they are for choosing the next activity, not grading the child.
Finish with success and revisit later
End with two or three facts the child can answer confidently. Return to the less-secure facts on another day so practice is spaced rather than crammed.
Automatic recall means being able to bring a fact to mind without rebuilding it from the beginning each time. Move up or down this ladder according to the fact being practised; one child may be secure with 5 × 8 and still need support with 7 × 8.
Department for Education guidance says that where automatic recall is not yet secure by the check, “fluency in facts up to 9 × 9 should be prioritised”. Choose a table and take turns saying its multiples. Pause at a number and ask how many groups it represents, or whether it belongs to another table too.
Use a rectangle or picture frame to combine repeated side lengths. For a 6-by-4 rectangle, ask how 2 × 6 and 2 × 4 help find the perimeter.
Use egg boxes, trays, shelves or rows of objects as arrays. Ask for the total, then turn the same arrangement around to show that 4 × 6 and 6 × 4 have the same product.
Access arrangements are school-selected supports that reflect a pupil’s normal classroom practice and help them access the check without changing what it measures. Standards and Testing Agency guidance says the support “must never advantage pupils”.
Schools do not need to apply for permission to use the listed MTC arrangements, but the choice should be based on what the pupil normally uses and should be tried in the official familiarisation area.
