Working memory difficulties can become noticeable when a child must hold several pieces of information in mind while using them. A child who starts an instruction but misses its later parts, forgets the question while writing or loses their place after looking away may be facing more demand than feels manageable at that moment.

A useful first response is to move important information out of the child’s head: write the next few actions, keep the question and a worked example visible, mark the current place and check one stage at a time. Remove the help gradually as the method becomes more secure.

These observations do not diagnose a fixed working-memory impairment or another condition. Similar behaviour can follow unclear instructions, unfamiliar material, an attention shift, tiredness, distress, slower processing, language or communication difficulties, interruption or distraction. The practical jobs are to make today’s task manageable, build subject learning over time and discuss a persistent pattern with school when needed.

The same difficulty can call for different kinds of support. Keeping these aims separate helps adults avoid either doing too much or expecting one technique to solve every problem.

A checklist can reduce the need to remember task steps without teaching the subject content. A recall activity can strengthen learned material, but it may be unhelpful if the child has not yet understood enough to retrieve successfully.

What working memory and cognitive load mean

Working memory is the brief holding and active use of information needed to complete a task, understand, reason or follow a sequence. In mental arithmetic, a child may need to retain the numbers, operation, intermediate answer and current stage. In writing, they may be holding the question, sentence plan, spelling and next action at once.

Short-term memory is often used for brief retention. A useful simplified distinction is that working memory adds attention, updating or manipulation. They are useful labels, but researchers do not treat them as perfectly separate, settled systems.

Cognitive load is the combined demand created by the material, the way the task is presented, the learner and the environment. Switching repeatedly between pages, following cluttered instructions, ignoring irrelevant detail or remembering several administrative actions can consume capacity without helping the subject learning.

External memory aids are visible or replayable supports such as written steps, a checklist, model, marker or familiar routine. A worked example shows the problem and method together. Scaffolding is temporary support that is adjusted and removed as independence grows.

For revision, retrieval practice means trying to bring learned material to mind and then checking it. Spaced practice means returning to learning on separate occasions rather than concentrating it into one session. Metacognition means planning, monitoring and evaluating how a real subject task is being approached.

The demand is context-dependent. The same child may manage a familiar multi-step routine but lose track in a shorter unfamiliar problem. The aim is not to remove all effort; useful learning requires effort. The aim is to remove avoidable load so effort can go into the subject itself. There is no reliable single rule that every child can retain an exact number of items for an exact number of seconds.

What you may notice—and what to ask next

Use observations to examine the interaction between the child, task and environment. The examples below can suggest overload, but they are not a diagnostic test and may have other explanations.

Replace repeated adult directions with a visible cue, then review whether it works.

Eight steps to make homework easier to follow

These are low-risk, evidence-informed adjustments rather than a single proven home programme. The research base is stronger for classroom teaching than for one exact parent-led sequence, so judge each adjustment by whether it improves access, understanding and independence.

A quieter or visually simpler space may help some children, while others benefit from movement or another individually useful arrangement. There is no universal rule about silence, background music, desk set-up or a fixed timer. Agree a short, achievable section, stop at a natural boundary and leave the first action for returning clearly visible.

  • 1. Clarify the task

    Identify what the child is producing, which resources are needed and what ‘finished’ looks like. Avoid adding a long verbal explanation to a task that is already confusing.

  • 2. Make the next actions visible

    Write a short sequence using concrete actions, for example: read the question, underline the command word, choose the method, complete one step and check.

  • 3. Show a model when the process is unfamiliar

    Use a completed or partly completed example. Discuss the method and choices rather than asking the child simply to copy the final answer.

  • 4. Check the first action

    Ask the child to explain the first step in their own words or point to it. This checks understanding without turning the interaction into a memory test.

  • 5. Work in manageable sections

    Show one part of a worksheet at a time when that reduces unnecessary switching. Keep any essential question, plan or information close to the answer area.

  • 6. Mark the stopping point

    Use a sticky note, ruler, on-screen marker, tick box or written ‘next action’ so the child can resume after looking away or taking a break.

  • 7. Check at agreed points

    Ask ‘Which step are you on?’ or ‘What will you check next?’ at agreed moments. Continuous correction can replace the child’s own monitoring with adult monitoring.

  • 8. Fade support deliberately

    Move from a full model to a partly completed model, then to a brief cue and independent completion. Return temporarily to stronger support when a new topic or sharper level of challenge makes that necessary.

Let’s work out what the task is asking and put the steps where you can see them. I won’t teach you a different method from school. We can mark the part to ask your teacher about.

Why this helps

Use this wording when the child needs help organising the task but the school method is unclear or should remain the basis of the work.

It reduces task-management demands without hiding uncertainty or replacing the child’s subject learning with an adult’s method.

Revision strategies that build learning without overload

Retrieval practice is better supported for delayed retention than passive rereading, but it should begin after the child has enough understanding to make a meaningful attempt. Spacing means returning to learning on separate occasions; it does not require one supposedly perfect calendar.

Start with the school’s explanation, a worked example and a small amount of guided practice. Ask the child to explain the first action before removing the model.

How to describe the pattern to school

When this applies

The same pattern persists, appears across tasks, or home adjustments help but the child still needs frequent adult support.

Suggested wording

We have noticed that [name] can explain the topic but loses track when an instruction has several parts or when they switch between the question and their answer. Written steps and a worked example help at home. Are you seeing the same pattern, and could we compare which cues support them without doing the task for them?

Why this helps

A useful message describes the task, what happened, the support tried and its effect. It asks school to compare observations without asserting a disorder.

It gives school observable information and invites a shared plan while avoiding a conclusion about diagnosis.

Who to speak to across the UK

Parents can raise an observable learning barrier without first naming a condition. Not every forgotten instruction creates a statutory additional need. The table gives a sensible first contact in each UK nation; it is not a full account of statutory rights or formal processes.

What is working memory, and how is it different from short-term memory?

Why does my child lose track during homework?

When should I speak to school?

Raise the pattern when it persists, appears across tasks or continues to limit access or independence despite practical adjustments. Describe the task, what happened, how often, what the child says, what was tried and whether it helped. Use the appropriate first contact and terminology for your UK nation.

Do working-memory difficulties mean my child has ADHD, dyslexia or autism?

No conclusion about a condition can be drawn from forgetting instructions or losing place alone. Similar behaviour may relate to understanding, attention, language, fatigue, distress, unfamiliarity, processing demands or the environment. Discuss persistent concerns with school or an appropriate professional rather than using these observations as a self-assessment.
