Current answer

Applying for September 2027

For September 2027 entry, Sheffield’s online application deadline is midday on Friday 16 October 2026. Paper applications must be returned by 31 October 2026.

Last checked: 30 September 2026. This planner covers Sheffield, England. The council identifies this intake as children born 1 September 2015 to 31 August 2016. If your child is currently in Year 5, use the visit questions now, but wait for the admissions timetable for their own entry year.

Start with Sheffield’s secondary application guidance. England’s national offer day is Monday 1 March 2027. The events below are labelled relative to this check date; open the school’s link for changes and booking arrangements before travelling.

Keep these admissions dates separate

Do not treat 31 October as the online deadline in Sheffield. Use the dates on the council’s current webpage and form for your child’s entry year; dates copied onto individual school pages can lag behind.

Selected Sheffield school open evenings

Dates and status checked on 30 September 2026, for September 2027 Year 7 entry. This is a selected list, not a school ranking or a complete city calendar. Each date has been checked against the school’s own information and the council’s open-evening list. Tapton’s time is supplied by the council. “Upcoming” below means after the check date, not necessarily after the day you read this.

Preferences, catchment and admission rules

The September 2027 Sheffield form has three preference fields. Rank different schools in the order you genuinely want them. The council’s linked parent guide explains that adding second and third choices does not weaken your first choice: where more than one school can offer a place, the highest ranked available preference is offered. That guide is labelled 2026–27; this explanation uses its allocation guidance, while the dates above come from the current 2027-entry sources. Read the council’s linked parent guide.

Catchment is not a guaranteed place

Use the council catchment finder with your postcode and house number. Living in catchment does not guarantee admission. If a new-development address is missing, contact admissions rather than choosing a nearby address.

Oversubscription rules decide priority

These are the rules used when more children apply than places are available. Academies and other schools that manage their own admissions can have different policies. Read each school’s September 2027 arrangements and identify the category that actually applies to your child; last year’s allocation is not a promise for this year.

Some schools need extra documents

The current form specifically names All Saints, Notre Dame and Parkwood as needing additional documents sent directly to the school. Obtain the relevant school’s current form and deadline as well as completing the council application.

Questions to take to each school

Ask the same core questions at each visit, then add one or two that matter especially to your child. Write down the answer and who gave it; a busy evening can otherwise blur several schools together.

  • What will an ordinary Year 7 day feel like?

Ask about arrival, lesson changes, lunch, homework and the journey home. Let your child identify one thing that felt comfortable and one thing they want explained.

  • How does a pupil get help?

Ask who notices a child struggling, how parents contact the form tutor, and what happens after a bullying concern. Request a concrete example of how support is organised.

  • How would support work for my child?

Describe the need rather than assuming a diagnosis tells the whole story. Ask how primary-school information is transferred and how the SENCO can discuss learning, sensory or access needs.

  • Can our family manage the daily arrangements?

Try the journey at the relevant time. Note transport, uniform and equipment costs, breakfast or after-school arrangements and any activities your child would actually use.

Suggested wording

We are considering a Year 7 application for September 2027 and missed the open evening. Are any daytime tours or alternative visits available? If not, could you send the presentation or prospectus and tell us who can answer questions about Year 7 transition and support? Our main question is: [add your question].

Why this helps

It gives the school a specific request without assuming another visit will be offered. Keep working towards the application deadline while awaiting a reply.

Before you submit

Keep one record for your family rather than separate scraps from every visit.

  • Write down your three preferences

Record the school name, your reasons for choosing it, its admission criteria and any unanswered question. Keep your child’s view alongside practical issues such as the journey.

  • Complete the application and any extra school forms

Use the correct entry year and home address. Record separate supplementary-form deadlines where they apply. An open-evening booking is not an application for a school place.

  • Keep evidence of submission

Save the completed details and confirmation. For the paper route, retain a copy and use the return instructions on the current form. If you cannot tell whether it has arrived, contact admissions promptly.

  • Plan for the offer

Keep the email account and contact details used for the application accessible. When an offer arrives, read its response deadline and any refusal or appeal instructions.

Support and clarity

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions people ask most often.

Do I still apply if the secondary school is linked to our primary?

Yes. In England you still need to apply for the secondary place. A linked primary school does not replace the application process; read the secondary school’s admission arrangements to understand any priority it gives.

Does listing only one school show a stronger preference?

No. Government guidance says that listing only one school does not increase the chance of a place there. Use the available preferences for different schools you would consider, in your genuine order.

Can I visit Silverdale after missing its open evening?

At the 30 September 2026 check, Silverdale’s admissions page advertised a school-tour booking link with a maximum of two tickets per family. This planner has not verified remaining dates or capacity. Use the school link in the event table to see what is available.
