How to Learn Effectively in Live and Recorded Online Lessons

How do you learn effectively in an online lesson?

The most useful online study tips turn each lesson into a cycle rather than something you simply attend or watch. Before the lesson, prepare the essentials and write one question you want it to answer. During it, attempt answers, explain steps and mark the exact point where you become unsure. Take notes on ideas, methods, examples and questions instead of every spoken word. Afterwards, close the notes and retrieve what you remember before replaying or rereading. Check and correct the gaps, complete a related but fresh task, then return to important learning after a gap.

The Education Endowment Foundation describes self-regulated learning as “Planning, monitoring, and evaluating their learning.” For a student, that becomes a practical four-phase cycle.

Before the lesson: prepare in five steps

Keep preparation brief. The aim is to reduce avoidable friction, activate relevant knowledge and give your attention a clear target.

  • Check access

    Open the joining link, check sound and power, and make sure any required files are available. This is practical risk reduction, not a special learning technique.

  • Put the right materials within reach

    Have the relevant notebook, worksheet, textbook, calculator or permitted digital document ready before the explanation starts.

  • Recall something connected

    Write the topic and one thing you remember from the previous lesson or from earlier study. A partial memory is enough to begin.

  • Turn the topic into a question

    For example: “How do I decide which formula to use?” or “Why does the writer change tone here?”

  • Remove avoidable interruptions

    Close unrelated tabs, silence non-essential notifications and move messaging out of view. The goal is not perfect concentration; it is fewer competing tasks.

During a live online lesson: make your thinking visible

Active participation does not mean speaking constantly. It means doing something with the material so that you and the tutor or teacher can see what you understand and where you need feedback.

  • Attempt before the full answer appears

    When a question is asked or a worked example begins, make at least a partial attempt. You then have something real to compare with the explanation.

  • Explain the reason, not only the answer

    Say or write why you chose a method, quotation, rule or conclusion. A correct answer can still hide uncertainty about the process.

  • Mark the exact point where you became unsure

    Note the line, word, step or decision that stopped making sense instead of writing only “I do not understand”.

  • Use the agreed lesson tools

    Participation may happen through speech, chat, written working, an interactive whiteboard, reaction tools or a short explanation after thinking time.

  • Test the explanation with a fresh example

    After watching one model, explain one step and try a related task with something changed. This checks whether you can select and apply the method yourself.

A precise question gives the tutor or teacher more information about the kind of help you need.

Each question identifies the location or type of difficulty. That makes feedback more useful and gives you a clearer way to check whether the gap has closed.

How to learn from a recorded lesson

A recording is useful when it helps you think, diagnose and practise. The University of Oxford warns: “Don’t confuse attending the lecture with learning.” The University of Cambridge adds: “Recordings are only one piece of the puzzle.”

  • Set the purpose

    Decide whether you are catching up, revisiting one confusing section, checking notes or preparing a question. Do not assume every live lesson has an authorised recording.

  • Retrieve before replaying

    When revising, write what you remember first and identify the uncertain point. This gives the replay a specific job.

  • Navigate to the need

    Use chapters, slides, search, bookmarks, transcript text or timestamps where available. Captions and transcripts can help with access and navigation, but feature quality varies.

  • Pause at a meaningful boundary

    Pause after a worked example, a new concept or a question. Predict the next step, summarise the section or draw the process; do not follow a fixed pause countdown.

  • Save the precise gap

    Write a specific question or timestamp instead of repeatedly replaying the same section without deciding what is unclear.

  • Finish away from the recording

    Close it and attempt a fresh question, explanation, diagram or example. If the connection failed or you missed a session, catch up reasonably promptly where an authorised recording is available.

  • Choose speed by understanding

    There is no universal best playback speed. Use a speed at which you can still predict, explain, take useful notes and recall the material afterwards.

Recorded lessons: less productive and more productive choices

Rewatching can help, but targeted replay is more diagnostic than letting the whole lesson run again without a clear purpose.

The University of Oxford advises: “Don’t take notes word for word.” Use notes to preserve the main idea, a useful example, your uncertainty and a question that makes you retrieve later. Research comparing handwriting and typing is mixed and largely comes from higher education, so choose an accessible method that helps you summarise and organise ideas with as little unrelated distraction as possible.

After the lesson: retrieve, check, correct and practise

Retrieval practice means bringing information or a method to mind before looking at the answer. A systematic review of classroom research covered 50 experiments and 5,374 learners, while noting limits in the geographical evidence base. A 2025 meta-analysis found only a small overall advantage over stronger elaborative activities, with a clearer advantage when corrective feedback followed retrieval. Use retrieval here as a cycle of attempt, check, correct and explain, not as a guarantee or a replacement for other good study activities.

  • Close the lesson and notes

    Remove the answer from view before judging what you know.

  • Retrieve the main ideas or process

    Write or say the key points, reproduce the method or draw the process from memory. The amount should match the lesson rather than a fixed quota.

  • Mark uncertainty honestly

    Leave a gap or add a question mark where you are unsure instead of turning a guess into a confident answer.

  • Check and correct

    Compare the attempt with the lesson material, model or feedback. Correct the error and explain why the corrected step or answer makes sense.

  • Turn gaps into questions

    For example: “Why is this operation valid?” or “Which word supports this interpretation?” Concrete self-explanation questions are more useful than a vague instruction to think aloud.

  • Complete a related but fresh task

    Use different numbers, evidence, wording, variables or source material so you can test whether the method transfers beyond the original example.

  • Return after a gap

    Revisit important questions in a later session rather than doing all review in one block. Evidence supports spacing, but not one universal timetable for every learner and subject.

What should I do when I do not understand part of a live lesson?

Mark the exact line, step, term or decision where understanding stopped. Make a partial attempt and ask a specific question about that point. After the explanation, try a related example with one detail changed to check whether the gap has actually closed.

Do I have to put my camera on?

Follow the agreed rules for the lesson. There is no universal study rule requiring cameras to be on, and camera use alone does not demonstrate learning. What matters is being able to follow the explanation, attempt the work and communicate when help is needed through the agreed tools.

What if my connection drops during an online lesson?

Use the provider’s agreed procedure and reconnect where possible. Note the point you missed and ask for the relevant material or explanation afterwards. Do not assume that a recording exists or that every provider uses the same reconnection process.

How soon should I review an online lesson?

Review early enough to identify gaps while the lesson context is still useful, then return to important questions after a gap. Evidence supports spacing rather than doing all review in one block, but it does not establish one timetable that works for every subject and learner.
