GCSE resit budget

GCSE resit costs: what will you need to pay?

Check funded study first, then compare the complete exam-centre charge and any teaching you choose. England funding rules and dated private fee examples.

Who may have a funded English or maths resit?

These are England’s 2026/27 rules. They do not establish entitlements in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Students on funded 16–19 programmes

The English and maths condition covers 16–18-year-olds without grade 4 or an accepted equivalent on study programmes or T Levels of at least 150 hours, plus specified students with EHC plans and continuing students aged 19+. Full-time students with grade 3 must study GCSE; those with grade 2 or below may follow GCSE or an approved route towards Functional Skills Level 2. Your college should identify the appropriate course. Read the funding condition.

What a funded institution can charge

For eligible students who are under 19 on 31 August when their programme starts, compulsory tuition, enrolment, registration and exam fees are generally prohibited. Free tuition continues in consecutive years on the same programme. English or maths study towards grade 4, where that grade has not yet been achieved, is specifically excluded from the rule allowing some resit charges. Charges can still arise in stated circumstances, such as unmet reasonable attendance or work conditions, or missing an exam without good reason; illness and other acceptable reasons are not grounds for charging. Ask the college to explain any bill against the funding rules.

Adults aged 19 and over

The national Adult Skills Fund rules fully fund eligible English and maths learners who lack grade 4 or comparable/higher attainment, including some previously qualified learners assessed as having current skills below that level. Residency, age and course eligibility apply. These national rules cover non-devolved areas; a local provider must confirm the rules where adult funding is devolved. Fully funded learners cannot be charged compulsory direct costs essential to completing and achieving the learning aim, but an exam-only resit without additional learning is excluded. Check the adult funding rules.

Published fees: compare the same parts of the bill

All examples below were observed on 11 October 2026. They explain different charging structures; the sessions differ, so this is not a cheapest-centre ranking. Ask for a new written quote for your own entry.

Three named fee examples distinguish a board charge from total private exam-centre charges.

Board-only charge, itemised centre example and bundled centre price

Provider and examPublished amountWhat it covers and what to check

AQA: November 2026 GCSE English Language 8700 or Mathematics 8300F/8300H

£51.20 standard entry fee per full qualification, charged to a UK centre.

Board entry only; not a private candidate’s centre total or tuition price. The standard deadline has passed. AQA adds 100% from 5 October, or 150% after 25 October; the two surcharges are not added together. Centre deadlines may be earlier.

Thomas Gainsborough School: November 2026 Pearson Edexcel GCSE maths

Published worked example: £52.95 entry + £45 registration + £100 invigilation = £197.95 for all three papers.

Bookings closed. This is the school’s worked example, not a current offer. Its page also contains conflicting £40 registration prose and older linked board schedules. It illustrates the separate cost items; it is not an independently verified current Pearson tariff. No tuition or travel is included in that calculation.

Tutors & Exams: summer 2027 GCSE maths, AQA 8300/OCR J560/Edexcel 1MA1/Eduqas C300

£332 per subject, not per paper, under the 2026/27 tariff effective 1 September 2026. Summer standard-entry deadline: 7 February 2027; late fees start 8 February.

Published as one standard entry price, without hidden registration or undisclosed compulsory extras. Board, administration and invigilation shares are not individually priced. Additional services are listed separately; this exam tariff does not promise a tuition package. Confirm your centre, specification, acceptance and all supplementary costs. Do not add the separate AQA board fee above to this centre price.

Build a complete resit budget

Use: complete exam-centre quote + any separately agreed teaching + travel/materials = your budget. Only add a charge if it is not already included. Treat unknown items as “quote required”, not £0.

  • Pin down the entry

Give each centre the subject, exam board, specification code, tier if relevant and exam series. Ask for a per-subject total covering every required paper, rather than assuming a price is for the whole qualification.

  • Separate compulsory exam costs

Record board entry, centre administration, invigilation and the seat. If these are bundled, use the bundle total once. Ask for the centre’s own booking deadline and what changes if it is missed.

  • Check non-written components

If your subject involves non-exam assessment (NEA), spoken assessment or practical requirements, establish whether the centre accepts the component and whether supervision or assessment is included. A generic provider’s “practical endorsement” price does not mean every GCSE requires one.

  • Decide how to prepare

List any tuition or course fee separately from exam entry. For hourly teaching, multiply the agreed hourly rate by the total teaching hours you plan to buy, then add any separately quoted materials. Paying a tutor does not itself book an exam.

  • Confirm before paying

Ask for cancellation, transfer and refund terms, the payment deadline and any remaining extras. Check the statement of entry when issued. Use AQA’s private-candidate entry guidance when arranging an entry.

Suggested wording

I would like to resit GCSE [subject], [exam board and specification code], [tier if relevant], in [exam series]. My age is [age] and my current grade is [grade].

Do you accept private candidates for this entry? Please quote the total for all required papers and identify what is included for board entry, registration, invigilation and any required spoken/practical/non-exam assessment. Please list any additional compulsory costs and confirm whether teaching is included or separate.

What is your booking deadline, when is payment due, and what are the late-entry, cancellation and transfer terms? I need to discuss [access arrangement]; who should I speak to about evidence and support?

If you offer funded English or maths study, could you also confirm whether I qualify, what learning is required and whether my exam entry would be included?

Why this helps

Sending the same details to each centre lets you compare complete entries. Keep the written reply with your booking confirmation and statement of entry.

Is an E a pass at A level?

Yes. E is the lowest passing grade at GCE A level and carries 16 UCAS points. Passing the qualification does not necessarily meet a university offer or job requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions people ask most often.

Will paying for an online GCSE course also pay for the exam?

Only if the course contract expressly includes the exam entry. Teaching and exam-centre services may be sold separately. Ask who will make the entry, which centre you will attend and which papers or other components are included before treating a course price as your total budget.

Can I get a free resit just to improve a grade 4 or above?

Do not assume so. The protected English and maths resit position in the 16–19 funding rules concerns students working towards grade 4 where it has not yet been achieved. Some grade-improvement resits may be charged. Adult funding has separate eligibility and assessment rules; ask the provider about your own course rather than relying only on the word “resit”.

Is the exam fee charged once or for every paper?

It depends on what the quotation describes. The AQA figure above is a full-qualification board entry fee, and Tutors & Exams states its price per subject, not per paper. A centre may itemise invigilation separately, as the Thomas Gainsborough School example does. Ask for the total covering every paper and any required non-written component.

Where can I check whether a resit is the right next step?

For timing, qualification choices and preparation, read our GCSE resits guide. If your concern is whether the original marking was correct, the separate reviews of marking and appeals guide explains that decision.
