Interleaving revision: when mixing topics helps

Mix related topics after you understand the basics, so you practise choosing the method as well as using it. Start with blocked practice when a topic is new or insecure.

What is interleaving revision?

Interleaving revision means mixing related, previously taught topics or question types so you have to recognise what kind of problem you are facing and retrieve the right method. It is not random switching between unrelated subjects.

Use it after the basics are usable. If a topic is new or very insecure, begin with a short run of similar questions—blocked practice—then add it to a mixed set once you can recognise the topic, explain the method and learn from corrections.

The aim is to practise two skills at once: carrying out a method and deciding when that method applies.

Blocked vs interleaved practice

Blocked practice groups several examples of the same topic or method together. Interleaved practice alternates related topics or methods. A simple blocked sequence looks like A A A — B B B — C C C. An interleaved sequence looks like A B C — B A C — C A B.

Neither schedule is a permanent winner. A strong revision sequence often moves from a worked example and short blocked practice into related mixed questions, then returns to blocking briefly if an error shows that the underlying knowledge is missing.

Interleaving, spacing and retrieval practice are different

Interleaving alternates related topics, categories or problem types so you must recognise each item and choose the relevant method.

Spacing distributes encounters with material over time instead of concentrating them in one sitting.

Retrieval practice means recalling or applying knowledge from memory before checking notes or a worked answer.

One mixed question set can combine all three: topic A returns after B and C, so it is spaced; you answer without notes, so you retrieve; and you choose among A, B and C, so the set is interleaved. They are still not synonyms. You can space blocked practice, retrieve one topic in a block, or complete an interleaved set with notes open.

Other useful terms are problem-type discrimination—telling similar questions apart before choosing a strategy; prior knowledge—what you already understand before the task begins; transfer—using learning on a new example; and desirable difficulty—a reachable challenge that supports later learning. Which subjects and tasks suit interleaving?

The evidence is uneven. Mathematics is the clearest school-level use case; other applications should be described more cautiously.

Mix related equations, mechanisms or practical concepts and identify the clue that determines the principle or formula.

The evidence is less extensive than for mathematics and does not prove a broad UK examination effect.

Language grammar

Some direct evidence suggests delayed benefits, while prior knowledge affects the result.

Teach and practise a new form clearly first, then mix it with confusable forms in sentences where meaning determines the choice.

A grammar result should not be stretched into a claim that every language task benefits equally.

New vocabulary pairs

Mixed or cautionary evidence; pure interleaving can be too difficult before associations are established.

Learn new terms in a clear, supported way first, then mix known and developing vocabulary for retrieval and discrimination.

Do not shuffle entirely new word pairs and assume that greater confusion means better learning.

Visual categories

One of the more consistently positive areas in meta-analytic research.

Compare related diagrams, artistic styles, geographical features or biological structures where subtle differences matter.

Many studies use controlled visual-category tasks rather than ordinary school assessments.

History, literature and essay subjects

Sparse direct evidence for lengthy tasks.

Mix shorter tasks such as evidence selection, theme comparison, command-word recognition or choosing an argument for a question.

Do not claim that continually alternating whole essays has the same evidence as mixed mathematics questions.

Long reading or extended writing

Sparse direct evidence, and systematic-review findings should not be generalised to lengthy tasks.

Protect uninterrupted time for the extended task, then mix shorter retrieval or comparison activities around it.

The available evidence is too sparse to claim that frequent switching improves comprehension or composition.

  • Recognise the type

  • Use a correction

  • Identify the error

  • Step back when needed

    If several statements are not true yet, use a short explanation and blocked refresher before adding the topic to a mixed set.

How to build an interleaving revision session

Use this as a practical pattern, not a universal formula. The group size, question count and session length should respond to what you know, what you miss and what you need to prepare for.

  • 1. Choose a meaningful group

    Select a small, manageable set of related, already taught topics whose differences are worth noticing.

  • 2. Check the foundations

    Try or explain one representative example of each type before mixing them.

  • 3. Refresh weak material

    Use a brief explanation, worked example and short blocked run for any topic that cannot yet be recognised or completed meaningfully.

  • 4. Mix the approaches

    Arrange questions so consecutive items usually require different methods. Remove method-revealing headings where that is fair and useful; strict randomness is not necessary.

  • 5. Retrieve before checking

    Attempt the fact, formula, interpretation or procedure from memory. If needed, use a small cue, then a worked example, close it and retry.

  • 6. Classify the error

    Do more than record the final mark. Decide whether the problem was missing knowledge, method recognition, execution, question reading or confidence.

  • 7. Adapt the next set

    Keep recognition errors in carefully designed mixed practice. Repair missing knowledge briefly, then return it to the mix.

  • 8. Revisit later

    Bring the group back after a delay so the same work also contributes to spacing.

  • 9. Keep the schedule flexible

    No universal number of topics, question ratio, session duration or repeat interval has been established for every learner and task.

Useful interleaving creates a meaningful choice between related alternatives. Premature mixing or constant unrelated switching does not.

You can use several area formulae but choose the wrong one when the question does not name the shape. Mix related shape questions and state the formula choice before calculating.

Maths: mix an untaught method

You have never understood circle area, but it is placed straight into a difficult mixed set. Learn the method with clear examples first, then return it to the shape set.

Science: identify the equation

You know several equations separately but struggle to select the right one from a written problem. Mix related calculations and underline the clue that determines the equation.

Switch among unrelated subjects

You change from chemistry notes to French vocabulary and then to an English essay every two minutes. The switching does not build a useful comparison between related alternatives.

You can produce two grammar forms separately. Mix sentences in which meaning and context determine which form is required.

Does interleaving mean mixing different subjects?

Not usually in the research sense. Interleaving works most clearly when you alternate related topics, categories or problem types whose differences are useful to recognise. A timetable can contain several subjects, but changing subject every few minutes is not automatically interleaved practice.

Is interleaving better than blocked practice?

Neither is always better. Blocked practice can establish a new method or association. Interleaving can then strengthen recognition, retention and strategy selection. A staged combination is more defensible than choosing one schedule permanently.

Why do I sometimes score worse when I first mix questions?

Blocked work supplies repeated cues, while mixed work makes you decide afresh which method applies. Lower immediate fluency can coexist with better delayed learning. However, if you cannot start or understand the correction, reduce the difficulty and rebuild the foundation.

How many topics should I interleave?

There is no research-backed universal number. Start with a small group of related, already taught types that is varied enough to require a choice but manageable enough to review properly. Expand only when your errors remain understandable and useful.

Can I interleave flashcards?

Yes, when the cards cover related, previously learned material and require retrieval before checking. For entirely new vocabulary pairs, establish the associations first rather than assuming immediate pure interleaving will help.

Can I interleave past-paper questions?

Yes. Select questions from several related, already taught topics and remove topic headings where that is fair and useful. Keep some full-paper practice as well, because mixed sets do not replace practice of paper format, timing, endurance and transitions.

Does interleaving work for essay subjects?

It can be used cautiously for shorter decisions such as selecting evidence, comparing themes, identifying command words or choosing an argument. Direct evidence is sparse for lengthy reading, extended writing and repeatedly alternating whole essays.

What should an interleaving revision timetable contain?

Show when related material returns and what you will do, not just a list of subject names. Include a blocked repair step where needed, later mixed practice, error review and another encounter after a delay. There is no universal calendar; adapt it to current knowledge, upcoming assessments and feedback.
