What is the A-level Chemistry practical endorsement?
In England, the A-level Chemistry practical endorsement is a compulsory, teacher-assessed part of the course—not one final practical exam.
- You complete a programme containing at least 12 suitable practical activities, covering the required apparatus, techniques and skills.
- Your teacher decides whether the evidence shows that you meet all five Common Practical Assessment Criteria (CPAC) consistently.
- The outcome is Pass or Not Classified (NC) and is reported separately from your written A-level grade.
- Practical knowledge still earns marks in the written papers through questions on methods, data, uncertainty, errors and evaluation.
A Pass adds no marks to the examination grade, and NC does not itself remove that grade. However, a university or course may require a Pass separately. Ofqual’s science conditions set out the regulatory separation between the two results.
