Current answer
Are GCSE English Language and English Literature separate subjects?
In England and Northern Ireland, English Language and English Literature are normally separate GCSE qualifications with separate results. For learners beginning Year 10 in Wales from September 2025, the main qualification is an integrated English Language and Literature single or double award. In Scotland, most learners following the national system take National 5 English instead of two separate GCSEs.
Where the subjects are separate, the clearest difference is this: English Language mainly tests how you read supplied texts and produce your own writing, while English Literature mainly tests how you interpret and analyse literary works studied during the course. The divide is not absolute. Language papers can use literary fiction, and Literature assessments can include unseen poetry or extracts. Your exam board and UK nation decide the exact papers, tasks and assessment arrangements.
