What AS Level Maths tutors can cover
AS Level Mathematics is not just a repeat of GCSE. GOV.UK’s subject content says AS and A level Mathematics build on GCSE, introduce calculus and applications, and develop modelling, argument, proof and interpretation. The Department for Education also describes AS Mathematics as “a very useful qualification in its own right”.
A strong AS Maths tutor should therefore be comfortable with pure mathematics, statistics and mechanics, as well as the practical habits that make those topics examinable: notation, calculator fluency, interpreting data, setting out method and checking assumptions.
- Pure: algebraic fluency, functions, proof, graphs, trigonometry, calculus and vectors.
- Statistics: sampling, data interpretation, probability, distributions, hypothesis testing and large data sets.
- Mechanics: modelling motion, units, kinematics, forces, Newton’s laws and interpreting physical context.
- Pure Mathematics
- Proof, algebra, functions, coordinate geometry, sequences, trigonometry, logarithms, differentiation, integration and vectors.
- Statistics
- Sampling, data presentation, probability, distributions, hypothesis testing and work with large data sets.
- Mechanics
- Quantities and units, kinematics, forces, Newton’s laws and mathematical modelling.
- Exam-ready habits
- Calculator fluency, interpreting context, showing method and checking assumptions.
