Start with your course and the task in front of you

Microbiology studies microbes and their roles in disease, the environment and food-related processes. The useful starting point for tuition is the work you need to understand: a school biology question, a university module or a topic you want to explore independently.

The school examples below refer to AQA qualifications in England. For another board or UK nation, share your own specification so the lesson priorities follow your course.

GCSE Biology
In AQA GCSE Biology 8461, the separate Biology content includes bacterial population calculations from division time. Practise identifying how many divisions occur before calculating the final population; the worked example below shows this step.
A-level Biology
AQA A-level Biology 7402 includes antimicrobial investigations and questions about controls, uncertainty and experimental data. It also uses antibiotic resistance to illustrate selection: explain how an inherited advantage can become more frequent in a population, rather than saying bacteria decide to adapt.
University microbiology
Bring your module outcomes and assessment brief. For example, Surrey’s 2026/7 Practical and Biomedical Bacteriology module includes bacterial counting, identification, antimicrobial susceptibility and presenting experimental results. A tutor match needs to reflect those specific tasks.
Independent or returning learners
Name the question that interests you, such as microbes in food or the environment, and what you already understand. Agree whether to begin with biological concepts, scientific vocabulary or interpreting numerical results.

A school example: count the doublings first

Consider this practice question: a population starts with 200 bacteria and doubles every 20 minutes. How many are there after 60 minutes?

There are 60 ÷ 20 = 3 doubling intervals. Follow the population through them: 200 → 400 → 800 → 1,600. In one calculation, this is 200 × 2³ = 1,600 bacteria. The small raised 3 means multiply by 2 three times.

Multiplying 200 by 3 gives 600, but counts the intervals without applying the doubling. The improvement is to connect each time interval to the whole population becoming twice as large.

This question assumes ideal doubling throughout, with no delay before growth and no deaths. Its 20-minute interval is a given value, not a rule for all bacteria. To check the reasoning, change the time to 80 minutes: there are four doublings, so 200 × 2⁴ = 3,200. Explain why the extra interval doubles the previous answer.

A university example: what does a colony count tell you?

For a module using viable counts, try this paper-based example: 48 colonies are reported from 0.1 mL of a sample diluted to 10⁻⁴ of its original concentration. Here, 10⁻⁴ means one ten-thousandth. Estimate the original concentration in colony-forming units per millilitre, written CFU/mL.

Use the colony count divided by both the dilution fraction and the volume represented:

48 ÷ (10⁻⁴ × 0.1) = 4,800,000 CFU/mL, or 4.8 × 10⁶ CFU/mL.

Dividing by the dilution alone gives 480,000. That misses a second correction: the colonies came from one-tenth of a millilitre, so the estimate per millilitre is ten times larger. Writing the volume and units beside the calculation makes this omission easier to spot.

A better final answer includes an interpretation: “The estimated original concentration is 4.8 × 10⁶ CFU/mL under the culture conditions used.” It is not an exact count of individual cells. A colony-forming unit can originate from a single cell or a clump of cells. These are constructed practice data; the task is to explain the calculation and its limits.

Choose expertise that matches the difficulty

A course title alone leaves a lot unanswered. Use a recent piece of attempted work to show whether the difficulty is the biology, the mathematics or the conclusion drawn from the results. Check the tutor’s listed teaching levels and relevant experience, then discuss the actual topic.

  • Subject depth

For a school topic, look for an explanation that connects a biological process to the question. For a university module, ask about the named area, such as bacterial identification or antimicrobial susceptibility, and the type of data you need to interpret.

  • Explanation and feedback

Discuss how the tutor would help you locate an error: for example, confusing doubling with multiplication by the number of intervals, or omitting the plated volume in a viable-count calculation. The proposed next task should check the corrected reasoning.

  • Pace and access

Explain what makes studying difficult and what already helps. You might request larger diagrams, spoken explanations alongside written steps, or scientific notation unpacked before calculations. Agree useful adjustments with the individual tutor.

Turn one difficult question into a useful lesson

Bring the question, your attempted answer and any feedback, alongside the relevant course or module outline. This is a suggested structure to agree with your tutor; the starting task should set the pace.

  1. Find the point of confusion

Explain your working before looking at a solution. If the doubling sequence is correct but the final multiplication is wrong, focus on the arithmetic. If you can calculate CFU/mL but call it an exact cell count, focus on interpreting the result.

  2. Practise the missing step

Write each doubling on a time line, or label the dilution fraction and millilitre volume separately. Ask for the notation to be explained until you can describe what each number represents.

  3. Check independent progress

Attempt a fresh version without the worked answer in view. Keep a brief note of the original mistake, the correction and anything still uncertain. Use that next attempt to decide what needs another lesson.

Prepare your microbiology enquiry

Include your level or module, a specific topic, the next assessment or learning goal, your deadline and budget. If you are arranging lessons for a child, include the learner’s own description of what they find difficult. You can compare tutor profiles or send Latimer a free tutor-matching request.

Use the free introductory meeting to discuss the tutor’s approach, the priorities for paid lessons and a workable timetable. It is a conversation about fit and arrangements, not a full free teaching lesson.

Latimer’s service is online-first and one-to-one. Microsoft Teams is the default lesson platform, with alternatives by agreement. Before the first paid lesson, check that you can join the agreed platform and share readable questions, diagrams or results.

Support and clarity

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions people ask most often.

Do I need a microbiology tutor or a biology tutor?

Choose around the work you need help with. If microbes are one topic in a wider school Biology course, you may want a tutor who also covers the rest of that specification. For a university bacteriology module or a specialised data task, discuss that precise content and assessment before choosing. The GCSE Biology and A-level Biology pages below are useful starting points for broader school-course support.

How much does microbiology tuition cost?

Each tutor sets their own hourly rate, shown on their profile. Compare that rate with the level and topic support you need, and confirm the lesson duration and timetable before booking. Latimer invoices for lessons after they take place on a pay-as-you-go basis. Use a clear lesson priority and a follow-up practice task to assess whether the time is helping with your goal.

Can online tuition replace my practical assessment?

No. Online sessions can be used to discuss methods, calculations and interpretation, while assessed practical work follows your course’s arrangements. For AQA A-level Biology 7402, the practical endorsement is assessed through direct teacher observation, separately from the written-exam grade. Discuss practical preparation with your tutor and confirm required laboratory work with your school or university.

Can I get help understanding a microbiology lab report?

Bring the assessment instructions and the part you are struggling to explain: a calculation, the purpose of a control, the presentation of results or the limits of a conclusion. Check what outside support your course permits. Keep the analysis and writing you submit your own; a practice data set can help you work through the reasoning before returning to your report.

How often should I have lessons?

Agree a starting schedule around the task, deadline and time available for independent practice. A single calculation difficulty and a module with several unresolved topics need different plans. Review the schedule using fresh work you have attempted yourself, so further lessons respond to what remains difficult rather than a fixed number promised in advance.

Can I start if I am rusty with maths or scientific vocabulary?

Yes—make those starting points explicit in your enquiry. For example, ask to practise powers of ten and millilitre units before a dilution calculation, or to explain a growth sequence in words before using an exponent. For degree work, share the module outline so the tutor can judge which foundations are needed first.

Can microbiology lessons take place in person?

Latimer is online-first. In-person lessons need an individual arrangement with the tutor. If location is important, state it in your enquiry and confirm the meeting place and practical arrangements directly before booking.
