Choose Statistics tuition by the work you need to understand: your qualification or module, the statistical question and the point where you get stuck. Check the individual tutor’s teaching level, relevant methods and any required software before booking. This helps distinguish school qualification support from mathematical or applied work at university and beyond.

Start with your course and the task you need to do

Statistics tuition should fit the work in front of you. A school qualification, a mathematical degree module and an applied workplace question can require different explanations. Use your course outline or learning goal to narrow the choice.

School qualifications
Give the qualification, awarding body and tier where applicable. AQA GCSE Statistics in England, for example, includes planning data collection and interpreting data, with Foundation and Higher tiers. Use the dedicated GCSE or A-level page below for qualification-specific support.
University modules
Send the module outline and a recent question. Some modules focus on interpreting data; others require mathematical derivations. For example, Southampton’s 2026–27 Statistical Inference module includes maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference. Experience with school statistics alone does not establish a match for that work.
Professional and returning learners
Describe the decision or explanation you want to understand: interpreting a report, comparing measurements or refreshing probability. Specify your mathematical starting point and any required software. Agree a learning task using suitable example data, and check the individual tutor’s relevant methods and experience.

A worked example: which average answers the question?

Consider five invented waiting times: 10, 11, 12, 13 and 54 minutes. Assume these measure comparable waits in the same units, each wait counts once, and 54 is a valid observation.

The total is 100 minutes, so the mean is 100 ÷ 5 = 20 minutes. The observations are already in order, and the middle one gives a median of 12 minutes. The long wait pulls the mean upwards; it does not change which observation sits in the middle.

If the question concerns the central observed wait, the median is useful. If it concerns total waiting time per observation, the mean retains the contribution of the long wait. Saying “the average is 20” without identifying the measure and purpose leaves the interpretation incomplete. Neither result establishes the average for all future visitors: that would require attention to how these five waits were sampled. Nor should 54 be deleted simply because it is unusual.

For practice, replace 54 with 24. The total becomes 70 and the mean becomes 14 minutes, while the median remains 12. Explain why each measure changed or stayed the same. This is a useful lesson goal: choosing and defending a summary, as well as calculating it.

Match the tutor to the reasoning, then the software

Bring the research question, what was measured and how the observations relate to one another. Naming a software package is helpful, but it does not identify the statistical method or its assumptions.

  • Calculation or interpretation?

Point to the step you cannot explain: forming a probability, choosing a summary, reading an interval or interpreting output. Ask whether lessons can connect the calculation to a sentence about the original question.

  • Paired or separate observations?

Before-and-after measurements on the same people form pairs. A paired t-test works with each person’s difference; its normality check concerns those differences. The design and other assumptions, including independence between pairs, still need checking. A change alone does not show that an intervention caused it.

  • The required working environment

If your course requires R, SPSS, Excel or another package, name it in the enquiry and confirm the tutor can teach the required workflow. Discuss whether you need help understanding output, writing code or selecting methods. A Statistics listing does not establish expertise in every package.

Keep assessed project work your own

For a dissertation, report or assessed problem sheet, check your institution’s rules and the assessment instructions before arranging help. Where permission is unclear, ask your module leader or supervisor what outside support is allowed.

A suitable request might be to understand a method through a separate practice example, then apply the learning independently within those rules. Do not ask a tutor to complete your assessed analysis or write answers for submission. QAA describes contract cheating as a third party completing all or part of work submitted as a student’s own where that input is not permitted; payment is not required for it to count.

Bring the applicable instructions to the discussion. General advice about tuition cannot settle what your particular assessment permits.

Turn a difficult topic into a practical lesson plan

Use the free introductory meeting to discuss fit, goals and arrangements. It is not normally a full teaching lesson. The following is a suggested plan to agree with the tutor, rather than a fixed programme.

  1. Identify the first gap

Bring your own attempt and explain where you lose the thread. Separate a missing mathematical skill from uncertainty about which method to use or what the answer means. If notation is a barrier, ask for symbols to be defined before using them.

  2. Work towards independent explanation

Compare a worked example with a similar task you attempt yourself. For the waiting-time example, explain the effect of changing one value before calculating. Discuss smaller steps, readable working or extra time to explain an answer aloud if these help you learn.

  3. Review the work you can now do

Agree lesson frequency around your deadline, budget and practice time. Revisit a related task without prompts: can you choose the method, state the assumptions and interpret the answer? Use that evidence to decide whether to move on or revisit the topic.

Arrange Statistics tuition around your learning goal

Latimer offers online-first, one-to-one tuition. Browse Statistics profiles or make a free matching request with your qualification or module, difficult topic, preferred times and budget. After an introduction, arrange lessons directly with the tutor.

For online lessons, Microsoft Teams is the default platform; another platform can be agreed. Prepare readable questions and working, and use dummy data when sharing a software example. Keep passwords and private account details out of shared work, and check installation restrictions on school or workplace devices. Any in-person lessons need an individual arrangement.

Each tutor sets the hourly rate shown on their profile. Latimer invoices after lessons on a pay-as-you-go basis. Agree lesson length, frequency and any preparation or follow-up before booking, so you can compare cost with the support your particular task needs.

Support and clarity

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions people ask most often.

Can I start if I have forgotten the maths?

Describe what you can already do and bring a short attempt. You might need to revisit fractions, rearranging formulae or the notation used in your module before tackling the statistical method. Agree a starting point and pace with the tutor; a named course level alone does not show which prerequisites need attention.

Do I need a Statistics tutor or a tutor for my whole course?

Choose a Statistics focus when your main difficulty is statistical methods, calculations or interpretation. If you need help across a wider Maths or university course, say which other topics are involved and check the tutor’s coverage. A module outline is more useful for this decision than a broad degree title.

Can I book help for one difficult topic?

Describe the topic and what you want to be able to do afterwards. Discuss the scope, preparation and lesson length with the tutor before booking. A narrow calculation difficulty and a gap in the underlying method may need different amounts of work; review your independent attempt before deciding on further lessons.

What should I include if I am unsure which method I need?

Explain the question in ordinary language, what each observation represents and whether measurements come from the same people or separate groups. Add your course or module, permitted support and any required software. You do not need to guess a test name to make a useful initial enquiry.
