Choose the arrangement around the learner’s needs in each science. A subject list is a starting point: discuss the actual course and difficult topics before booking.

Consider this GCSE-level practice answer: “Plants photosynthesise instead of respiring.” It mixes up two processes. Photosynthesis uses light energy to make glucose; respiration transfers energy for living processes. Plant cells respire continuously, including when photosynthesis cannot take place in darkness.

A clearer answer would be: “Plants carry out both processes. Photosynthesis needs light, whereas respiration continues in their living cells during the day and at night.” This distinction is covered in AQA GCSE Biology’s bioenergetics content.

A useful next question is: “A plant is moved into darkness. Which process stops because light is absent, and which continues?” The answer is photosynthesis stops; respiration continues. Explaining why shows more than memorising the names. A tutor can use the learner’s first explanation to identify exactly where the ideas became confused.

For a GCSE-level paper example, start with H₂ + O₂ → H₂O. H means hydrogen and O means oxygen; the small number gives the number of that atom in the formula. There are two oxygen atoms on the left but only one on the right.

Put 2 before H₂O to balance oxygen. That now gives four hydrogen atoms on the right, so put 2 before H₂ as well: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O. Both sides contain four hydrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms. The large number multiplies the whole formula. Changing a small number would change the substance being represented.

For a follow-up, balance Mg + O₂ → MgO, where Mg means magnesium. The answer is 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO: two magnesium atoms and two oxygen atoms on each side. Explaining the atom count helps reveal whether the learner understands the method or is guessing coefficients. This uses the atom-conservation principle in AQA GCSE Chemistry’s quantitative chemistry content.

Here is a constructed Key Stage 3 example: an object travels 150 metres in 12 seconds. Average speed is total distance divided by total time: 150 ÷ 12 = 12.5 m/s. The unit means metres per second. Dividing time by distance reverses the relationship and gives the wrong unit.

Now keep the distance at 150 metres but change the time to 24 seconds. The average speed is 150 ÷ 24 = 6.25 m/s. Taking twice as long over the same distance halves the average speed. That explanation checks whether the learner understands the answer, beyond using a calculator.

Average speed does not tell us the speed at every moment. This relationship is part of England’s Key Stage 3 Physics curriculum. Use a calculation from the learner’s own course when judging the level of support needed.
