UCAS 2027: Parent Application Timeline

Key dates and practical ways to help your child apply, compare offers and plan next steps while keeping the decisions theirs.

Current answer

Which UCAS deadlines matter for 2027 entry?

For UK undergraduate applications through UCAS, 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time is the deadline for Oxford and Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine/science courses. 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time is the equal-consideration deadline for most other courses. Check each chosen course: these are not universal deadlines for every application route.

Your first job as a parent is to help your child put the correct course deadline and the school or college’s earlier hand-in date in one calendar. For a school-linked application, pressing Send passes it to the school; staff still need to check it, add the reference and send it to UCAS. Leave time for that step.

UCAS’s 2027 dates and deadlines underpin the timeline below. It is for 2027 entry, including applications made during 2026. If your child follows a different UK school system, use their school’s stage names and qualification arrangements alongside these UCAS dates.

The 2027 application timeline, with parent actions

Use this as a shared calendar, then add school deadlines, course-specific requirements and the applicant’s own reply date. Equal consideration means that providers consider applications received by the deadline equally; it does not promise an offer. After that date, providers do not have to consider an application, though some may still have places. Dates below come from UCAS’s application calendar.

WhenWhat happensA useful parent action

Spring and summer 2026

2027 course search opened on 28 April; applications opened on 12 May.

Help compare course content, entry requirements, travel and living arrangements. Ask what matters to your child before building a shortlist around rankings or your own preferences.

From 1 September 2026

Completed 2027 applications can be submitted to UCAS.

Agree a regular progress conversation. Ask the school for its hand-in, reference and payment arrangements; do not assume an application sent to school has reached UCAS.

15 October 2026, 18:00 UK time

Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine/science applications are due.

Check whether any chosen course uses this deadline and whether a separate admissions-test deadline comes earlier. Make space for the school’s checks before submission.

13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time

Equal-consideration deadline for most other undergraduate courses.

Work backwards from the school’s earlier deadline. Help with an agreed final read-through, then let the student and school complete their respective submission steps.

25 February–1 July 2027

Extra is available for eligible applicants who used all five choices and hold no offers; 1 July is the last date to add an Extra choice.

If no offer is held, help your child discuss remaining options with their adviser and check Extra eligibility before choosing another course.

30 June 2027, 18:00 UK time

Applications received after this time enter Clearing automatically.

For a late application, ask UCAS how to submit it and ask the course provider whether places remain. Do not treat June as an extension of equal consideration.

From 2 July 2027

Clearing opens.

Prepare a list of acceptable courses, contact details and questions. Opening day is not every student’s results day, and eligibility still matters.

23 September 2027, 18:00 UK time; 18 October 2027

23 September is the final application deadline; 18 October is the last date to add a Clearing choice.

If still seeking a place, speak to providers promptly about vacancies and start dates. A final UCAS date does not mean every course remains available until then.

Before submission: divide the work clearly

The student owns the application. A parent can make the practical work easier without choosing courses or writing responses for them. UCAS’s parent guide to filling in an application explains the school-linked process.

  • Student: record each course requirement

For each choice, record the application deadline and any test, portfolio, audition or interview instructions the provider gives. Use the current course information and UCAS admissions-test guidance; some test registrations close before the application deadline.

  • Student and school: agree the internal dates

Ask when the school needs the application, how the reference is handled, and when payment must be arranged. Raise questions about A-level predicted grades early enough for the school to explain its process.

  • Parent: offer a specific kind of help

Offer a calendar reminder, transport to a visit, a quiet hour to compare courses or a read-through for unclear wording. Ask which would help. Keep the student’s experiences and decisions in their own words.

  • Student and school: follow the application through to UCAS

For a school-linked application, Send is a handover to staff. Ask how the student will know the school has sent the completed application to UCAS; resolve uncertainty with the school before the UCAS deadline.

A conversation you can adapt

Example: the school deadline comes first

When this applies

Illustrative example: the school asks for the application by 4 December, while the chosen courses use the 13 January equal-consideration deadline.

Suggested wording

“The school needs yours by 4 December so it can do its part. What is still unfinished? Would a reminder, a read-through or time to talk to your adviser help? You choose the courses and write the application; I can help with the practical jobs we agree.”

Why this helps

This treats the school date as a real working deadline and gives the student a choice of support. The 4 December date is an example, not a national rule.

Offers: help compare the conditions, not just the names

When decisions arrive, ask your child to compare the offer wording, course and practical arrangements against their own priorities. UCAS’s guidance on what happens after applying recommends that parents act as a sounding board. Record conditions exactly rather than reducing every offer to a headline grade.

Conditional and unconditional offers

A conditional offer requires the applicant to meet stated conditions, usually results. An unconditional offer may still involve non-academic requirements. Read the full terms of each offer and ask the provider about anything unclear.

Firm choice

The firm choice is the applicant’s first choice. If the firm offer is conditional, the student needs to understand and work towards its conditions. A parent can ask: “Would you want to study and live here if you get in?”

Insurance choice

An insurance choice is an optional backup to a conditional firm choice. It should be somewhere the student would actually attend, ideally with lower conditions. If the firm conditions are met, the student cannot simply choose the insurance instead at results time. UCAS’s firm and insurance guidance explains how the replies work.

Offer replies have their own deadlines

The reply deadline depends on when the applicant receives their last decision. The dates below are UCAS’s published 2027 groups; the applicant should use the personal deadline shown in their application. Missing it means offers are declined by default. Agree a reminder, but let the student decide and make the reply. See UCAS’s reply guidance.

21 July 2027

Results and Clearing: prepare without deciding in a rush

Clearing helps fill remaining places. It can be relevant when an applicant holds no offer, has been unsuccessful or has not met offer conditions. Opening on 2 July does not mean every applicant should use it then. UCAS’s Clearing guide explains the process; use the 2027 calendar above for this cycle’s dates.

  • Before results: make a practical plan

Agree where your child wants to be, what support they want and how to reach the school and universities. Keep a shortlist of alternatives they would consider, with questions about course content, accommodation and costs. Confirm the school’s actual results arrangements rather than assuming one date for every qualification.

  • On the day: read the application status

If a university is still deciding, the applicant should contact it. Do not assume an unresolved decision means they are already in Clearing. A parent can help find numbers and note what was said while the applicant leads the conversation.

  • Before adding a Clearing choice: get permission

The applicant must contact the university or college and obtain permission before adding it as a Clearing choice. Only one choice can be added at a time. Check the course and offer details carefully before acting; an available place still needs to suit the student.

  • If the position is unclear: contact the school, provider or UCAS

Ask the school or college for help interpreting results and contact the provider about its decision. For an application-status or reply problem, contact UCAS promptly. Avoid making a new choice just to end an uncomfortable conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions people ask most often.

Can a parent speak to UCAS about the application?

The applicant can give a named person nominated access in the Contact details section. This allows that person to discuss application status with UCAS or the universities applied to, using the required security details and Personal ID. It is not a reason for a parent to take over the student’s choices. Agree beforehand what the student wants help discussing.

Does missing the January deadline mean university is impossible?

No, but equal consideration is no longer guaranteed and providers do not have to consider a late application. Before applying, ask the chosen provider whether it will still consider an application for that course. Applications received after 18:00 UK time on 30 June 2027 enter Clearing automatically; course availability and the applicant’s circumstances determine the next step.

What if the school’s hand-in deadline has already passed?

The student should speak to the school’s UCAS adviser promptly, explain what is unfinished and ask what is still possible. The national date does not remove the school’s work on checks and the reference. Agree a realistic completion plan with staff rather than assuming the application will be sent immediately.

How often should a parent check progress?

Agree a short check-in with the student at a frequency they find useful, with extra reminders around their actual deadlines. Ask what remains and what practical help they want. A shared calendar can reduce repeated questioning, but the student should still own the application, decisions and replies.
