Start with the Welsh you want to use

Tell a prospective tutor what you can already do and where you get stuck. Recognising words on a page, following a conversation and explaining an idea aloud are different starting points. Your plan should reflect the task you want to handle independently.

Beginning Welsh as an adult
Choose an everyday goal, such as introducing yourself or joining a family conversation. Learn Welsh’s Mynediad (Entry) courses start with everyday conversation about people, work and interests; that can help describe the level of support you need.
Returning to Welsh
Bring a short text you understand and explain what happens when you try to speak. A useful priority might be recalling familiar patterns quickly enough to answer, rather than restarting every topic.
Helping a child with school Welsh
Share the year group, teaching language, current topic and a piece of marked work. A child who can discuss a topic but struggles to write it needs different practice from one who cannot yet follow the question.
Preparing for a qualification
Give the exact course name and the year the learner started it. School GCSEs and adult Welsh learning pathways have different requirements; use the current course to choose the relevant tutor experience.

A beginner example: answering the question you hear

A learner may recognise the words for coffee and liking something but still hesitate over the reply. This practice example uses a question pattern from Learn Welsh’s South Wales Entry coursebook.

Wyt ti’n hoffi coffi? means Do you like coffee? For this question, Ydw means yes and Nac ydw means no. Learn the reply with its question pattern: these are not answers to use for every kind of Welsh question.

Read the meaning, listen to the question and choose the reply that is true for you. Then try Wyt ti’n hoffi siwgr? — Do you like sugar? The changed word changes what you are being asked, while the reply pattern stays the same. A better response is an answer to the new question, without needing to reread the first exchange.

In an online lesson, a tutor could say the question while you listen without the text, then show the wording to help locate the difficulty. Agree whether you want pronunciation corrections straight away or after you have finished speaking.

School Welsh: match tuition to the current course

For GCSE support in Wales, send the school’s exact WJEC course name with your enquiry. GCSE Core Cymraeg is primarily designed for learners educated through English, including those taught through English in bilingual schools. It is not intended for pupils who followed Cymraeg first-language study through Year 9.

Core Cymraeg includes asking and answering questions, justifying opinions, reading for meaning and detail, and writing for different audiences. It also includes literary response, so conversation practice alone does not cover the whole course.

GCSE Cymraeg Language and Literature combines the former separate Welsh Language and Welsh Literature GCSE routes. It includes interpreting characters, themes and writers’ choices, and explaining how language and form create meaning. Tutor fit should therefore include the learner’s actual texts and analytical writing needs.

Assessment arrangements were amended in 2026, with some changes tied to the year learners started Year 10. Share the course name, start year and school materials so preparation follows the right version. The school’s course details are more useful than an old worksheet labelled simply “Welsh”.

These are constructed practice illustrations, explained in English for parents. They are not assessment questions or model answers from an exam board.

Core Cymraeg: give a reason that uses the information

Imagine two youth clubs: one is nearby on Tuesday; the other is farther away on Saturday. “I prefer the Tuesday club” gives a choice. “I prefer the Tuesday club because it is nearby and I can walk there” connects the choice to a useful detail. If Tuesday clashes with another activity, the learner must weigh that detail too.

Practise expressing the choice and reason in Welsh, then responding when the other speaker suggests a different option. The improvement is a relevant reason and a response to someone else, rather than a longer memorised speech. For written work, use the same information to draft a short message, then check that the reason is clear and the language suits its reader.

Language and Literature: explain the writer’s choice

Consider the original English miniature “The door slammed” beside “The door closed”. Saying that the door shut retells the event. Explaining that “slammed” suggests force and abruptness identifies how the verb changes the impression. Anger is a possible interpretation, but the surrounding passage would need to support it.

Apply that distinction to the learner’s current Welsh text: select a precise word or phrase, explain its effect in Welsh and connect the interpretation to the passage. Keep the quotation and explanation visible together during online feedback. This checks the reasoning as well as the accuracy of the written Welsh.

Set up an online lesson for listening and written Welsh

Latimer’s lessons are online and one-to-one. Microsoft Teams is the default platform; you and the tutor can agree another meeting method. Before the first lesson, agree how you will hear the language clearly, view the work and keep corrections.

  1. Check the sound

    Test the microphone and speakers in the room you will use. For a pronunciation task, check that both people can hear a short phrase clearly; use headphones if they help reduce echo.

  2. Make the work readable

    Have the coursebook, school task or short text ready. Agree how to share it and how corrected wording will reach the learner afterwards. A screen needs enough space to read the passage while following feedback.

  3. Explain what helps the learner participate

    Mention any need for larger text, audio materials, written prompts or extra thinking time. Discuss these before booking so the tutor can confirm the arrangement. Learn Welsh’s linked Entry resource includes a screen-reader edition.

  4. Agree support for a child

    Decide who will help the child join and who will remain available if something goes wrong. Confirm communication arrangements between the parent and tutor before lessons begin.

Choose one task to repeat independently before adding more material. For conversation, listen to a short question and answer it before checking the wording. For school speaking, give a reason and respond to one follow-up. For literary writing, revise one explanation so it identifies a specific language choice and supports the interpretation.

Keep the original attempt and the correction together. At the next review, try a related task with a changed question or passage. Needing fewer prompts, responding to the new detail or explaining the wording more precisely gives you something concrete to discuss with the tutor.

Learn Welsh provides Entry and Foundation audio materials in northern and southern versions. Choose the material that matches your course or learning plan. Agree a frequency you can sustain alongside school, work or family commitments; a fixed number of lessons cannot tell you when an individual will be fluent.

Do I need to speak Welsh to support my child’s lessons?

You can help with the timetable, technology and having the right schoolwork ready without marking the Welsh yourself. Ask the tutor to give you a short explanation of the practice task and what your child should try independently. That makes your role clear even when the lesson content is beyond your own Welsh.

Should I learn northern or southern Welsh?

Start with the variety used by your current course, school or the people you want to speak with. Learn Welsh provides northern and southern versions of its Entry and Foundation audio resources. Share the materials you already use with a prospective tutor so vocabulary and pronunciation choices can be discussed together.

Can I arrange lessons in person instead?

Latimer is online-first. In-person lessons require an individual arrangement with a suitably located tutor. Explain that preference at the start of an enquiry, including where lessons would take place and any travel constraints.

Can I use a Welsh tutor for maths taught through Welsh?

That request needs both maths expertise and the ability to teach through Welsh. State the maths level and preferred teaching language in your enquiry so those requirements can be checked. Learning Welsh itself is a different tutoring goal.
