Check the qualification and the teaching fit

If you want a school-trained teacher, ask which teaching qualification and status the tutor holds and where these apply. Then ask about their experience teaching A-level Chemistry: a credential alone does not tell you how they will explain a calculation or respond when an explanation has not clicked.

Qualified teacher status (QTS)
QTS is a professional teaching status in England. If it is important to your choice, ask the tutor to confirm that they hold it; do not treat every qualification title as another name for QTS.
Postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE)
A PGCE is an academic qualification in education. Teacher-training courses can lead to QTS, a PGCE, or both, so check the actual award and status rather than assuming they always come together.
Chemistry knowledge and course experience
Discuss the tutor’s subject background, the A-level specifications they teach and how they would work through your marked answer. Look for an explanation you can follow, including why a tempting wrong answer fails.

Match the tutor to your Chemistry specification

Send the qualification title and code from your school or college. In England, AQA A-level Chemistry is 7405, Pearson Edexcel is 9CH0, and OCR offers Chemistry A (H432) and Chemistry B (Salters) (H433). OCR A and B are different specifications, so “OCR Chemistry” alone is not enough to choose the right resources.

The examples below use content found in England’s A-level specifications. If you take WJEC, CCEA or an International A Level, give the exact qualification name before choosing papers or agreeing practical support. AS Chemistry is also a distinct qualification. For example, AQA’s full A level extends into rate equations, acids and bases, organic synthesis and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR); ask about experience with the later course as well as its foundations.

A mole calculation: use the equation before the numbers

Here is a constructed titration question. A 25.0 cm³ sample of sulfuric acid is exactly neutralised by 20.0 cm³ of 0.100 mol dm⁻³ sodium hydroxide. Find the acid concentration.

The balanced equation is H₂SO₄ + 2NaOH → Na₂SO₄ + 2H₂O. A useful explanation links each calculation to this equation, rather than giving a formula to memorise.

  1. Convert the measured volume

    20.0 cm³ = 0.0200 dm³. Concentration here is measured in moles per cubic decimetre, so the volume must be in dm³ before using amount = concentration × volume.

  2. Find the amount of sodium hydroxide

    0.100 × 0.0200 = 0.00200 mol of NaOH. This is the amount of base added, not yet the amount of acid.

  3. Use the 1:2 reacting ratio

    The equation shows one mole of H₂SO₄ reacts with two moles of NaOH. The acid sample therefore contains 0.00200 ÷ 2 = 0.00100 mol.

  4. Divide by the acid volume

    25.0 cm³ = 0.0250 dm³, so the acid concentration is 0.00100 ÷ 0.0250 = 0.0400 mol dm⁻³. An answer of 0.0800 mol dm⁻³ has missed the reacting ratio.

  5. Check the method with a changed titre

    If the same acid sample volume needed only 10.0 cm³ of the same NaOH solution, its concentration would be 0.0200 mol dm⁻³. Explain why halving the amount of base halves the calculated acid concentration.

Explain why a catalyst does not increase equilibrium yield

Consider this statement about ammonia production: “Adding a catalyst gives more ammonia at equilibrium because the reaction is faster.” The difficulty is the jump from reaction rate to equilibrium composition.

A catalyst provides a reaction pathway with lower activation energy. It speeds up both the forward and reverse reactions, so equilibrium is reached sooner. At unchanged temperature and pressure, it does not shift the equilibrium position.

A better answer is: “The catalyst speeds up the approach to equilibrium but does not increase the equilibrium yield of ammonia.” This distinction helps a learner answer the question actually asked: how quickly products form and how much product is present at equilibrium are different issues.

To check understanding, ask the learner to explain why a shorter time to equilibrium does not, by itself, show that the final mixture contains more ammonia.

Full A-level work: derive a rate equation from data

AQA places rate equations in the full A level, beyond AS. Here is a constructed example for reactants A and B, keeping temperature unchanged. Doubling the concentration of A while keeping B unchanged makes the initial reaction rate four times as large. Doubling B while keeping A unchanged leaves the rate unchanged.

The relationship is rate = k[A]²: [A] means the concentration of A and k is the rate constant. A is second order because doubling its concentration multiplies the rate by 2² = 4. B is zero order because changing its concentration has no effect on rate in these data. Calling A “fourth order” confuses the rate multiplier with the power in the equation.

A useful check is to triple [A] while keeping the other conditions unchanged. The rate would be 3² = 9 times as large. Explaining that prediction shows more understanding than copying the final equation.

Use practical tuition alongside your centre’s laboratory work

Practical preparation should include explaining the evidence, not just recalling apparatus. With titration results, for example, identify which readings belong in the mean, explain any excluded result and track how measurement uncertainty affects the conclusion. Simply writing “human error” leaves the source of uncertainty unexplained.

For AQA and Pearson Edexcel A-level Chemistry in England, the practical endorsement is reported separately from the written grade. Written questions also assess practical understanding. Online discussion can help with calculations, methods and evaluation; it cannot replace the supervised practical work and direct observation required for the endorsement. Arrange that part with your school, college or exam centre.

Set priorities and make progress visible

Bring a recent marked question or a page of working to the first lesson. It gives the tutor a starting point: does the difficulty come from the Chemistry, the calculation, the language of the question or bringing several ideas together? Agree a small priority and how you will check it.

  • Rebuild a missing step

    If units and ratios are getting mixed up, work through one step at a time before returning to a full titration question. Ask for written intermediate steps, more thinking time or a different explanation where these help.

  • Practise without the prompt

    Between lessons, try a similar question with different numbers, then an unfamiliar question that uses the same idea. Keep the attempted working so the next lesson can address the reason for an error.

  • Review before adding more topics

    Look for independent reasoning: choosing the right reacting ratio, carrying units through and explaining an equilibrium conclusion. Agree when to review these signs and adjust the plan, rather than judging progress only by pages completed.

Can a tutor help with the step up from GCSE Chemistry?

Yes: make the transition problem specific when you enquire. For example, you may understand a simple concentration calculation but struggle when an A-level question also requires a reacting ratio. Bring the working you can already do and the point where it stops making sense, so the tutor can start there.

What if I understand lessons but struggle with unfamiliar exam questions?

Show the tutor an attempted question before looking at a worked answer. Ask to separate identifying the relevant idea from carrying out the method. In Chemistry, that might mean recognising a mole ratio within unfamiliar practical data, or deciding whether a question asks about rate or equilibrium yield. Agree practice that checks those decisions independently.

Can I arrange in-person A-level Chemistry lessons?

Can I get help if I am retaking or studying independently?

Explain the qualification, the part you are retaking and what teaching or centre support you already have. What if I do not know my exam board yet?

Check the front of a recent practice paper or your course handbook, or ask your school or college. You can enquire while finding this out: explain which course you think you take and add the exact title or code when you have it. Confirm these details before choosing a set of revision papers.

Will a qualified tutor guarantee my target grade?

No. A teaching qualification is one part of choosing a tutor, not a promised exam result. Set a realistic plan around your starting point and available time, and check whether you can explain and apply the Chemistry more independently as lessons progress.
