Make your working visible in an online lesson

For Chemistry, plan how both of you will see the equation, graph or structure being discussed. Microsoft Teams is Latimer’s default lesson platform; you and the tutor can agree another platform. Test the arrangement before the first paid lesson. If the learner is under 18, agree communication boundaries and a suitable study space with a parent or carer, with an adult within earshot.

  1. Bring the question and your attempt

    Send a clear image of the whole question, including any data or diagram, and your own working. Include teacher feedback if you have it. An unfinished attempt can reveal more than a copied model answer.

  2. Choose a readable way to write

    Agree whether to use a shared writing surface, a camera view of paper or photos of handwritten work. Check that superscripts, charges, subscripts and arrowheads are legible. Try a laptop or tablet for viewing detailed questions; keep paper and a calculator beside you.

  3. Agree a pace you can follow

    If crowded screens or rapid explanations are difficult, request larger text, one calculation step at a time and a pause to write. Agree how to save the worked example and what to do if the connection drops.

A titration calculation, one decision at a time

Here is a constructed practice question: 25.0 cm³ of 0.100 mol dm⁻³ sulfuric acid exactly neutralises 20.0 cm³ of sodium hydroxide solution. Find the sodium hydroxide concentration.

The balanced equation is H₂SO₄ + 2NaOH → Na₂SO₄ + 2H₂O. The coefficient 2 means that each mole of sulfuric acid reacts with two moles of sodium hydroxide.

  1. Convert the acid volume: 25.0 cm³ ÷ 1,000 = 0.0250 dm³.
  2. Use amount = concentration × volume: 0.100 × 0.0250 = 0.00250 mol of H₂SO₄.
  3. Apply the equation ratio: 2 × 0.00250 = 0.00500 mol of NaOH.
  4. Convert the alkali volume to 0.0200 dm³, then divide: 0.00500 ÷ 0.0200 = 0.250 mol dm⁻³.

An answer of 0.125 mol dm⁻³ can result from missing the 2:1 ratio. Seeing each line online lets the discussion focus on that chemical decision, rather than simply correcting the final number.

For a follow-up, keep the acid amount unchanged but suppose it neutralises 40.0 cm³ of sodium hydroxide. The alkali still contains 0.00500 mol, now in 0.0400 dm³, so its concentration is 0.125 mol dm⁻³. Twice the volume is needed because this alkali is half as concentrated. Explain that relationship before reaching for the calculator.

Turn an equilibrium rule into a chemical explanation

Consider this statement about a reversible reaction at equilibrium: “Adding a catalyst increases the equilibrium yield because the forward reaction is faster.” The missing step is to consider the reverse reaction.

A catalyst speeds up both directions. It does not change the equilibrium position, so the equilibrium yield is unchanged at the same conditions. If the mixture has not yet reached equilibrium, the catalyst helps it get there sooner. A better response is: “A catalyst increases the rates of both forward and reverse reactions. It does not change the equilibrium composition.”

This distinction matters when a question asks separately about rate and yield. In an online discussion, mark which part of your answer concerns speed and which concerns the final mixture. Then try a fresh question without those prompts. For a course that includes equilibrium constants, extend the explanation to why the catalyst does not change the constant at a fixed temperature.

Draw an organic mechanism from the electrons

For an illustrative nucleophilic substitution, start with CH₃Br + OH⁻ → CH₃OH + Br⁻: hydroxide reacts with bromomethane to form methanol and a bromide ion. A curly arrow shows the movement of an electron pair, so its starting point matters.

Draw the first arrow from a lone pair on the oxygen of OH⁻ to the carbon bonded to bromine. Draw the second from the C–Br bond to Br: that bond’s electron pair leaves with bromine. Show the negative charges on hydroxide and bromide. An arrow starting at the hydrogen of OH⁻ would not show the electron pair that forms the new C–O bond.

When sharing a diagram online, enlarge the structures enough to inspect those two starting points. A correct product alone does not show the mechanism; the arrows explain how the bonds change. This paper-based illustration uses an electron-pair mechanism included in AQA Chemistry.

Use the right A-level Chemistry specification

Send the full qualification name and specification code if you know them. A shared topic name does not make two courses’ assessments interchangeable. Use your course’s own specification, question papers and mark schemes when planning exam practice.

AQA Chemistry 7405
Identify whether the work belongs to the shared AS content or the additional A-level content. Rate equations and Kp are examples of A-level-only content in this specification, so preparation should go beyond an AS-only question set.
OCR Chemistry A H432 and Pearson Edexcel 9CH0
Include the specification code when contacting a tutor. In particular, distinguish Pearson’s UK GCE course from its International A Level. Ask how practice will follow the named course’s topic coverage and assessment structure.
WJEC Chemistry in Wales
The A level includes an experimental task and a written practical-methods-and-analysis task in Unit 5. This differs from England’s separately reported endorsement: preparation needs to match the Welsh qualification.
Northern Ireland or an international course
Provide the awarding body and specification rather than relying on the phrase A level alone. Agree course-specific support before booking, particularly for practical assessment or a resit.

Separate practical understanding from assessed laboratory work

Online tuition can focus on the reasoning around practical work: interpreting measurements, choosing a graph, explaining uncertainty or evaluating a method. Bring your own data and teacher feedback so the discussion starts from the investigation you actually studied.

For AQA 7405 and Pearson Edexcel 9CH0 in England, written assessment of practical skills and the separately reported practical endorsement serve different purposes. Working through a practical question on screen does not demonstrate that you can carry out the technique in a laboratory. Arrange required practical work and assessment with your school, college or accepting examination centre; an online tutoring lesson does not replace that provision.

Choose a tutor and agree what the lessons will cover

    Discuss the tutor's experience with your specification and the areas you need to work on. For example, if you can recall organic reactions but cannot explain a mechanism, ask how lessons would connect electron movement, structures and the written answer.

  2. Agree a focused starting point

    Choose a priority from recent work: setting up calculations, explaining a concept or interpreting unfamiliar data. Ask what you should be able to attempt independently after working on it, and how corrections will be discussed.

  3. Confirm the practical arrangements and cost

    Each tutor sets their own rate; check the current profile and agree lesson length, scheduling and any cancellation terms directly. Latimer uses pay-as-you-go billing. Consider the planned practice between lessons alongside the lesson cost.

  4. Check progress with fresh work

    Keep an initial attempt, the corrected version and a similar unseen question. Look for a specific change: a correct unit conversion without a reminder, an explained equation ratio or a complete equilibrium argument. Agree when to review the next priority.

Can I start if my GCSE Chemistry foundations are shaky?

Yes. Tell the tutor which A-level work is difficult and bring an attempt. A useful starting task might connect balancing an equation, finding moles and using a ratio in one calculation. Revisit the missing step, then return to the A-level question so foundation work has a clear purpose.

How often should I have online Chemistry lessons?

Agree a schedule around the gaps you need to address, your budget and the time you can spend practising. A regular lesson with time to attempt questions between sessions is one possible starting arrangement; there is no single frequency that suits every learner. Review whether you are completing the practice and can use the method independently before increasing lesson time.

What if my mock or final exam is close?

Send the assessment date and recent marked work when you enquire. Separate errors caused by missing knowledge from errors in calculation, interpretation or explanation, then agree a manageable priority list. Use papers for your exact course. A short revision period calls for a focused plan; it cannot establish a promised grade or complete coverage of every topic.

Can a private candidate or resit student use online tuition?

Online tuition can support your study, but confirm exam entry and any practical-assessment arrangements with an accepting centre before relying on a timetable. Give the tutor your specification, previous results and any feedback. Ask the centre directly what applies to your circumstances, including any previous practical result; do not assume booking a tutor also books an exam.

Can I combine online and in-person lessons?

Latimer’s service is online first. In-person or mixed arrangements need to be agreed individually, including location, travel and a suitable learning space. Describe the learning task that needs a different format. If that task is assessed laboratory work, speak to your school, college or examination centre about appropriate provision.

Can tuition focus on a university-offer requirement?

Tell the tutor the actual Chemistry grade or other condition you are working towards, together with your current work and examination date. Entry requirements vary by course and provider, so check the intended university’s current course information. Use the requirement to set priorities; tuition cannot guarantee meeting an offer.
