Start with the right 13+ Maths assessment

There is no single nationally standardised “13+ Maths exam”. A pupil may be preparing for ISEB Common Entrance, an earlier ISEB Common Pre-Test, CASE, a school scholarship assessment or a paper written by the destination school. The most useful first step is therefore to identify the school, current year group, assessment type and date.

A suitable tutor should then help separate subject gaps from fluency, reasoning, timing, calculator use or confidence issues. Tuition can be valuable where there is a defined need, but it should not be presented as compulsory for every admissions stage. The aim is better understanding and preparation—not a guaranteed score or school place.

Pricing, tutor types and commitment

Tutors set their own rates. Latimer’s current platform-wide guidance is usually £20–£30 per hour for subject specialists and usually £25–£50 for qualified teachers, examiners or lecturers. These are broad service-wide bands, not a guaranteed 13+ Maths price range; the live tutor profile is the place to check the current rate.

Latimer’s current process page says, “The price we present is the price you pay.” The service is described as pay as you go, with invoicing after lessons, saved-card charging after 48 hours’ notice and bank transfer also supported. Current first-party guidance also says there is no platform sign-up fee, package fee or long-term contract. Any package or discount is agreed with the individual tutor.

Cancellation and rescheduling arrangements can vary. Confirm the tutor’s current terms before the first paid lesson and use Latimer’s current FAQs for the latest platform guidance.

Online lessons and honest local options

Latimer describes its service as online first. For Maths, an online lesson may use shared questions, worked solutions, verbal explanation, visual working and a live whiteboard. Microsoft Teams is the current default platform, although another platform may be agreed; tutors do not all use identical tools in every lesson.

Online tuition can widen the choice of 13+ specialists, which is useful when the pupil needs experience of a particular school assessment process, Additional Mathematics or scholarship-style problem solving. In-person lessons may sometimes be possible when a tutor and family are geographically close and agree the arrangement, but availability is not promised for every town or postcode.

School support or well-chosen self-study may be enough where the need is limited or a school advises against special preparation. A tutor adds most value when there is a clear diagnostic, teaching or accountability need.

Credentials, safeguarding and live profile checks

The strongest tutor choice is rarely based on one badge. Compare experience relevant to the pupil’s assessment, mathematical depth, teaching experience, scholarship or higher-level problem solving where relevant, and the tutor’s approach to confidence, communication and known learning needs.

Use the live profile for the exact qualification, rate, accepting-enquiries status and DBS information. A profile should say explicitly whether someone is a qualified teacher, examiner or specialist; those labels should never be inferred. Latimer’s safeguarding policy describes role-appropriate checks and says it looks for an Enhanced DBS including the Children’s Barred List for tutors working with children. Check the individual tutor’s current profile information and the safeguarding policy rather than assuming the same status applies in every case.

For younger learners, the current policy recommends that a parent or guardian knows when the lesson is taking place, knows the platform and remains available nearby.

13+ assessment knowledge

Which 13+ Maths assessment is your child taking?

“13 Plus” is an admissions umbrella rather than one official paper. Schools can use an earlier adaptive Pre-Test, ISEB Common Entrance in Year 8, CASE, their own written or computerised tests, scholarship assessments, interviews and school reports in different combinations.

The destination school’s current admissions page controls its stages, dates and required papers. ISEB information controls ISEB assessments only. There is also no single ISEB-wide or UK-wide pass mark: each receiving school decides how results are used and may publish its own expectations.

ISEB Common Pre-Test
Often used in Year 6 within a 13+ assessment. Adaptive online multiple-choice Maths is based through the end of Year 5; calculators are not allowed and pupils cannot return to earlier questions. A tutor needs the school deadline, year group and exact stage.
ISEB Common Entrance at 13+
Normally taken in Year 8. It may involve Foundation or Core calculator and non-calculator papers, mental arithmetic and possible Additional Mathematics. A tutor needs the required level, session and senior-school expectations.
ISEB CASE
A Year 8 scholarship assessment with a harder 90-minute, 100-mark non-calculator paper. Confirm that the school actually uses CASE and follow its current scholarship instructions.
School-specific 13+ test
A school-written or selected paper whose timing, content and calculator rules vary. Use the current syllabus, specimen material and admissions instructions.
School scholarship assessment
May use demanding school or ISEB material alongside other stages. Confirm the scholarship syllabus, expected depth and current school requirements.

ISEB 13+ Maths papers, timings and calculator rules

For the current ISEB Common Entrance specification, candidates take Foundation or Core. The specification treats Core as the usual expectation, while Foundation may be used where appropriate and agreed with the receiving senior school. Some Core candidates also take Additional Mathematics, and candidates sit mental arithmetic.

A simple scientific calculator is permitted on the calculator paper and Additional paper under the current regulations. Advanced functions such as graph plotting, automated algebra and stored formulae or notes are restricted. Mental arithmetic and CASE Mathematics are non-calculator. These rules do not automatically apply to school-written papers.

What a 13+ Maths tutor may diagnose

Current ISEB Mathematics aims cover far more than topic recall. They include fluency, investigative thinking, problem solving, reasoning, selecting appropriate methods, logical working, making connections and learning from mistakes. England’s Key Stage 3 programme provides similar supporting context through fluency, reasoning and problem solving, although individual UK schools and assessment types differ.

A useful diagnostic separates missing knowledge from weak fluency, poor method choice, calculator judgement, timing, accuracy or confidence. It should follow the actual paper rather than assume every KS3 topic is relevant. For example, the current ISEB table allows Pythagoras at Additional but not Core, while trigonometry is not examined at either level.

A useful first lesson: assessment check, diagnostic and priorities

There is no official ISEB template for a private tutor’s first lesson. A strong evidence-led example begins with the assessment, because a tutor cannot diagnose effectively against the wrong paper. It then samples a small range of skills and ends with two or three priorities rather than a vague promise to cover everything.

Bring recent school work, test feedback or authorised specimen material where available. Share the destination school, assessment, level, date, known learning needs and current confidence, and ask how progress and parent communication will work.

An adaptable four-week preparation plan

This is an example starting cycle to tailor after diagnosis, not a guaranteed programme. The right pace depends on the assessment type, deadline, baseline, independent practice, school workload and the pupil’s concentration.

With many months available, secure fundamentals and reasoning before heavy timed practice. With a few months remaining, combine targeted repair with mixed exam-style work and timed sections. In the final several weeks, prioritise recurring errors and assessment-specific technique rather than introducing large amounts of new content. There is no universal number of lessons required.

Past papers, practice and independent progress

ISEB provides specimen materials and controls access to recent past papers. Parents and tutors cannot purchase a live paper until a year after the examination, and papers from Autumn 2022 onward follow the updated specification. Use authorised material only—never live, leaked or unofficial papers.

The most useful paper work is diagnostic. A tutor can use a suitable timed extract, classify the errors, reteach the underlying need, set manageable independent practice and then re-test. Constant full papers may consume material without fixing the reason marks are being lost.

Good school support and free resources may be enough when a pupil can identify and correct errors independently. Tutoring adds value where diagnosis, explanation, accountability or assessment-specific feedback is missing. Support should gradually build self-checking and independent method choice rather than dependence.

Support for different 13+ learners

The right support depends on the stage and the pupil. A Year 5 or Year 6 learner facing an adaptive Pre-Test needs a different plan from a Year 8 pupil preparing for CE Core, a school-written paper or scholarship Mathematics. Some pupils need foundation repair; others need confidence, timing, assessment-specific challenge or greater independence.

Tutoring should not manufacture pressure. Some schools explicitly say particular stages do not need special preparation. Where support is useful, it should address a defined gap and increase the pupil’s ownership over time.

Dyscalculia, SEND and access arrangements

Maths-learning difficulties, maths anxiety and dyscalculia are not interchangeable. A tutor with suitable experience may adapt pacing, written layout, worked examples, concrete or pictorial representations, retrieval and practice. Formal dyscalculia diagnosis, however, requires an appropriately qualified assessor.

For the 2026–27 ISEB Common Pre-Tests, families may request 25% extra time or other adjustments, but the senior school approves the arrangement and decides what evidence is required. Built-in options include a coloured overlay, adjustable font size and the ability to hide the timer. Current CE regulations also contain defined arrangements for some pupils with English as an additional language; eligibility and restrictions must follow the current rules and senior-school agreement.

Teaching adaptations and formal assessment arrangements are separate. A tutor can adapt learning; the school or assessment process controls extra time, technology, readers, dictionaries and other formal adjustments.

Is 13 Plus Maths the same as Common Entrance Maths?

No. 13 Plus is a broad admissions label, while ISEB Common Entrance is one possible assessment. A school may instead use an earlier ISEB Common Pre-Test, CASE, its own Maths paper, a scholarship assessment, interviews or a combination of stages. Start with the destination school’s current admissions process and use Common Entrance wording only where it actually applies.

What papers are in ISEB 13+ Common Entrance Maths, and can pupils use a calculator?

Under the current ISEB specification, Foundation or Core has one 60-minute non-calculator paper and one 60-minute calculator paper, each worth 100 marks, plus a 10-minute mental-arithmetic test worth 40 marks. Additional, when taken, is 60 minutes and 100 marks with a permitted calculator. CASE is separate: it is a 90-minute, 100-mark non-calculator scholarship paper. Permitted equipment should be checked against the current regulations before the assessment.

When are the next ISEB 13+ Maths exams and registration deadlines?

As reviewed on 11 August 2026, the published CE sessions are 2–6 November 2026, 25–29 January 2027, and the Summer 2027 session, whose written papers run 7–11 June 2027. CASE written sessions are 22–24 February 2027 and 4–6 May 2027. These are ISEB sessions, not universal school deadlines. ISEB’s current public registration pages do not yet state a future guardian-registration deadline for the Autumn 2026 or Spring 2027 CE sessions. For the 2026–27 Pre-Tests, registration opened on 9 June 2026, testing starts on 1 September 2026 and runs until late May 2027, with each senior school setting its own deadline.

What is the 13+ Maths pass mark?

There is no single ISEB-wide or UK-wide pass mark. Receiving schools decide how results are used and may publish their own expectations. A figure quoted by one school must not be treated as a universal 13+ threshold.

Is the ISEB Common Pre-Test the same as Common Entrance?

No. The Common Pre-Tests are earlier adaptive online assessments in English, Mathematics, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Pre-Test Maths is based on curriculum content through the end of Year 5; calculators and textbooks are not allowed, and candidates cannot return to earlier questions. Common Entrance is a different examination normally taken in Year 8.

Are online 13 Plus Maths lessons suitable if I searched for a tutor near me?
