0580, 0980 and the papers to prepare for

Cambridge uses Core and Extended entry routes. For exams in 2025–2027, 0580 Core offers grades C–G and Extended A*–E; 0980 Core offers grades 5–1 and Extended 9–3. Ask the school or exam centre to confirm the code and entry route before choosing resources.

Both qualifications use the paper structure below in 2025–2027. Each paper contributes 50% of the qualification. Extended includes Core content as well as additional material, so higher-grade preparation still needs reliable basic methods.

Core Paper 1
Non-calculator: 1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks.
Core Paper 3
Calculator: 1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks.
Extended Paper 2
Non-calculator: 2 hours, 100 marks.
Extended Paper 4
Calculator: 2 hours, 100 marks.

Core example: understand the fraction method

Fraction operations are part of Core and remain necessary in Extended. This constructed example shows the kind of explanation to look for in tuition.

Starting question: work out 3/4 − 2/5 without a calculator. Subtracting the two numerators and the two denominators does not work: quarters and fifths are different-sized pieces. Convert both fractions to twentieths so the pieces are the same size.

3/4 = 15/20 and 2/5 = 8/20, so 3/4 − 2/5 = 7/20. The denominator stays 20 because the size of each piece has not changed. A decimal check also helps: 0.75 − 0.4 = 0.35, which agrees with 7/20.

For a follow-up, try 5/6 − 1/4. A common denominator of 12 gives 10/12 − 3/12 = 7/12. A useful sign of progress is choosing that denominator and explaining why, without copying the first example.

Extended example: reverse a percentage change

Reverse percentages are specified in Extended. The difficulty is identifying which amount represents 100%, rather than reaching for a familiar percentage calculation.

Practice example: a jacket costs £48 after a 20% reduction. What was the original price? Adding 20% to £48 gives £57.60, but that uses the reduced price as the starting amount. The reduction was calculated from the original price.

After a 20% reduction, £48 represents 80% of the original. If the original price is x, 0.8x = 48, so x = 48 ÷ 0.8 = £60. Without a calculator, recognise that 80% is four fifths: one fifth is £12 and five fifths is £60. Check it by taking 20% of £60 (£12) away.

Now try an item costing £84 after a 30% reduction: 70% represents £84, so £84 ÷ 0.7 = £120. The transferable skill is identifying the original whole before selecting an operation.

Turn a topic list into specific learning priorities

A request such as “help with algebra” becomes more useful when the tutor can see where the working stops. Use the Cambridge syllabus for the entry route to choose the next task. These are examples of focused learning goals to discuss, rather than a fixed programme for every learner.

  • Algebra and graphs

    Distinguish simplifying an expression from solving an equation. In 3x + 6 = 18, show that subtracting 6 and then dividing by 3 keeps the two sides equal; substitute x = 4 to check. For graphs, connect a plotted point to the values it represents.

  • Geometry and measurement

    Label the diagram before choosing a method. Establish that a triangle is right-angled before using Pythagoras, and keep length, area and volume units distinct. An area written in cm needs correcting to cm².

  • Statistics and probability

    Explain what the values in a table count before calculating an average or probability. Check which outcomes belong in the total, rather than using whichever numbers appear closest to the question.

  • Multi-step questions

    Write down the required result and identify an intermediate quantity that would help find it. Keep the steps visible so an incorrect calculation can be separated from an unsuitable method.

Practise reasoning as well as accurate calculation

Cambridge assesses knowledge and mathematical techniques through AO1, and reasoning, interpretation and communication through AO2. In the 2025–2027 syllabuses, AO2 accounts for 30–40% at Core and 50–60% at Extended. A revision plan therefore needs questions where the method is not announced in the heading.

For example, after practising reverse percentages, mix a reverse-percentage question with an ordinary percentage reduction. Before calculating, explain whether the given price is the original amount or the changed amount. That tests the decision as well as the arithmetic.

For non-calculator practice, put the calculator away and keep exact fractions where useful. On calculator papers, write the mathematical setup before entering numbers. Keep extra digits through intermediate steps and round at the end: Cambridge’s 2025–2027 instructions specify three significant figures for non-exact numerical answers, or one decimal place for angles in degrees, unless the question says otherwise. This is different from rounding every answer to three decimal places.

Build lessons around an error you can explain

For ongoing support, agree a manageable lesson-and-practice rhythm with the tutor. A short series can instead concentrate on a defined gap or an approaching mock. The following is a suggested approach; the starting task and pace should suit the learner.

  1. Find the first uncertain step

    Bring a marked question and the original working. Separate a missing fact, a calculation slip and uncertainty about which method to choose. If the page is blank, start with a shorter version and ask the learner to talk through what they notice.

  2. Teach, then reduce the prompts

    Work through one explanation, then change the numbers or context. If the learner needs a slower pace, leave each step visible and ask one question at a time. Agree any specific communication or learning needs with the tutor.

  3. Return to it independently

    Try a related question after a gap, without the worked solution beside it. Record the error, the corrected reason and whether the method could be chosen unaided. A successful repeat of an identical question is less informative than handling a changed one.

  4. Use papers to choose the next priority

    Move from focused questions to mixed sets and timed practice as methods become secure. Review unfinished questions as well as wrong answers, then use the next lesson for the difficulty that still prevents independent work.

Use the introduction to check Cambridge course fit

A useful discussion gets beyond “we will do past papers”. For a learner struggling with reverse percentages, ask how the tutor would uncover which amount the learner thinks is 100%, then check understanding with a changed question. For someone finding Core arithmetic difficult, discuss the steps they can already manage and how explanations will build from there.

Agree how written work will be shared, the independent practice that is realistic between lessons, and how you will review progress.

Straight answers to the questions people ask most often.

Can tuition help if the learner is unsure about Core or Extended?

It can focus on the knowledge and methods the learner needs, but confirm the intended exam entry with the school or exam centre. Ask for the current route and discuss any proposed change with them before buying route-specific resources. A target grade alone does not identify which paper set the learner will take.

What if the exam is only a few weeks away?

Start with a recent paper and identify the questions the learner could make more progress on with a secure method. Agree a short list of priorities and leave time to attempt changed questions independently. Use timed practice to find pacing difficulties, but avoid filling every remaining session with full papers if the underlying methods still need teaching. No particular grade improvement can be promised.

Can we use older Cambridge past papers?

Use materials for the learner’s syllabus code and exam year. Older questions can still provide topic practice when the content matches, but do not assume an older paper reproduces the current calculator rules, timing or balance of assessment. For 2025–2027 preparation, use the relevant Cambridge syllabus and specimen materials to establish the format before planning timed work.

What if the learner will take the exams in 2028–2030?

Cambridge has published separate 2028–2030 syllabuses for 0580 and 0980. The Core and Extended paper arrangements and grade ranges above continue in that cycle. Use the syllabus labelled with the learner’s exam year when checking individual content points and choosing resources; the year lessons begin is not necessarily the year of examination.

How much does Cambridge IGCSE Maths tuition cost?

Each tutor sets their own hourly rate, so check the current profile and confirm the lesson arrangements. Latimer invoices for lessons on a pay-as-you-go basis. When comparing options, discuss the lesson length, frequency and work to do between meetings so you can judge the likely ongoing cost against the support the learner needs.

How do online lessons handle handwritten maths?

Latimer’s default platform is Microsoft Teams, with another platform possible by agreement. Before the first lesson, agree a way to share legible working, such as a clear photo of the exercise or a camera view of the page. Keep the question, calculator and writing materials within reach; show the method as well as the final answer so the tutor can see where help is needed.

Can lessons take place in person?

Latimer is online first. An in-person arrangement depends on an individual agreement with the tutor. If that matters to you, include the location and travel limits in your enquiry and confirm the practical arrangements before booking.
