Match the tutor to the qualification, board and History options
Two learners studying “History” can face very different content and task types. Before booking, give the tutor the exact qualification, awarding body, specification code if known, chosen periods or options, exam year and the paper or task currently causing difficulty.
At GCSE, AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas use different combinations of thematic, period, depth, local or historic-environment study, source work and interpretations. At A-level, the balance of breadth, depth, source and interpretation work, thematic study and assessed investigation or coursework also differs. A tutor who is a good general historian may still need to check the learner’s exact qualification and specification.
Wales: new Year 10 entrants from September 2026 use the Made-for-Wales GCSE History. The outgoing qualification has its final full assessment in summer 2027, with a January 2028 resit subject to demand. Scotland: use National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher terminology rather than assuming GCSE and A-level structures. Detailed Northern Ireland, IGCSE and IB coverage should be confirmed from the learner’s current course and the tutor’s live profile before support is promised.
