Match the support to the History course

A pupil learning to put events in order needs a different starting task from a student evaluating a historian’s argument. Match both the historical content and the kind of thinking the course requires. These are examples of useful tuition priorities, with the qualification named wherever its requirements matter.

KS2 in England: chronology and enquiry: Build a clear sequence of events, explain words such as monarchy or invasion in the topic being studied, and choose a source detail to answer a question. England’s curriculum also develops questions about cause and change. Bring the school topic so practice uses familiar historical material.
KS3 in England: evidence and explanation: Develop an enquiry into the past, select relevant knowledge and support a structured answer. Explain how different interpretations are constructed. If an answer lists events but never addresses the question, practise turning one relevant detail into an explanation.
GCSE: identify the board and chosen options: For example, AQA GCSE History 8145 assesses knowledge, explanation, contemporary sources and interpretations. Its course includes choices of period, depth and thematic studies. Share the actual options: a tutor needs to know the period as well as the question type you are practising.
IGCSE: check the syllabus and assessment route: For Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 examinations in 2027–2028, the syllabus includes structured essays, document questions and either coursework or an alternative paper. Give the syllabus code, examination year and chosen route so preparation fits the assessment you will take.
A-level: build and test a sustained argument: AQA History 7042 distinguishes breadth study with interpretations, depth study with primary evidence and an independent historical investigation. Tuition priorities might include weighing competing explanations or testing whether evidence supports a judgement across the chosen period. Identify the component as well as the topic.
Scotland: National 5 and Higher: National 5 History develops source evaluation and reasoned conclusions across Scottish, British, European and World contexts. Higher adds evaluation of complex issues and contributing factors, synthesis and supported conclusions. Use the correct Scottish course documents and selected topics when discussing a tutor match.

A source-analysis example: what does an order prove?

Here is a constructed practice answer using a real document. In a royal proclamation dated 5 September 1666, preserved by the National Archives, the king states that market places have been destroyed by the Great Fire of London and directs markets to be held at Bishopsgate, Tower Hill and Smithfield. The proclamation and transcript provide the starting evidence.

Starting answer: “The king ordered markets, so everyone had enough food.”

The difficulty is the jump from an instruction to a result. The named locations show a proposed response to disrupted trading. The document tells us what the king ordered; it does not tell us how much food reached each person. Calling it simply “biased” would not explain that limit.

A better response: “The proclamation shows an official attempt to restore food trading after market places were destroyed. The named locations make the planned response specific, but the order alone does not establish whether people obtained enough food.”

To investigate what happened next, look for further evidence such as a dated account of trading or food distribution. That would be a new source to find and evaluate, rather than a result to assume.

The same material can sharpen explanation. “Market places were destroyed, then new markets were ordered” gives a sequence. Explaining that replacement trading places were intended to address the disruption connects the problem to the response. It still leaves the response’s success open. This is the difference between adding another fact and using a fact to answer a historical question.

Turn one correction into independent History work

A useful lesson leaves the learner with something they can try without a model answer beside them. Agree a small task and a way to check it. For exam preparation, use material and questions from the learner’s actual course; the Great Fire example above demonstrates a skill without assuming it is on their syllabus.

Locate the difficulty in an existing answer
Bring the question, source and teacher feedback with the answer. Identify whether the obstacle is missing period knowledge, confused chronology, unfamiliar language or a conclusion that goes beyond the evidence. Choose one of these to address first.
Try the reasoning on a second document
The National Archives also holds a royal order dated 10 September 1666 directing a survey of London and adjoining suburbs after the fire. A survey here means examining and recording the area. Does this order prove that the survey was completed? No: it establishes the instruction; the finished survey or evidence of its delivery would be needed to check completion.
Adjust the task to the learner
For a KS2 learner, put the 5 September market order and 10 September survey order in sequence and explain what each was intended to do. For a secondary learner, select a precise detail and explain its value and limit for the enquiry. Use the archive’s simplified transcript and glossary if older wording gets in the way.
Check the next unprompted response
Try a fresh source from the period being studied. Look for accurate detail, a conclusion that follows from it and a sensible limit on that conclusion. Record which step still needed help, then make that the next practice target. More confident discussion and more independent writing can be checked separately.

Choose period knowledge and teaching fit together

Give the exact period and task
“History essay help” leaves much unclear. Add the board or module, option title, question and teacher feedback. A request about a source’s usefulness needs a different approach from a request to compare explanations across a whole period.
Discuss how the tutor would find the problem
Ask what they would look for in the learner’s recent answer. A useful discussion should distinguish missing historical knowledge from a reading or argument problem, and explain what the learner would practise next.
Describe the support that makes work manageable
Say if long extracts, handwriting, unfamiliar vocabulary or speaking under pressure make tasks difficult. Discuss shorter passages, a spoken explanation before writing or a smaller practice task. For specialist needs, check the individual tutor’s relevant experience and proposed approach.

What if I do not know the exam board or course code?

Start with the school year, current topic and what the learner finds difficult. A textbook cover, assignment sheet or school course outline may help identify the course. Confirm the exact board, options and examination year before detailed exam preparation. For Wales, give the full WJEC qualification title and year; for Northern Ireland, name the board, such as CCEA, rather than assuming an English specification applies.

Can a tutor help with assessed History coursework?

General research, source-evaluation and argument skills can be practised, but support for a live assessed task must follow the school or centre’s rules. For AQA A-level History’s historical investigation, the research and writing must be the student’s own. Agree the permitted support with the supervising teacher before sharing a draft for help; practise techniques on a separate question where appropriate.

Can a home-educated or private candidate enquire?

Yes. Give the intended qualification, options and examination year, and explain any arrangements already made with an exam centre. Set a review point and check an independent piece of work before deciding whether to continue at the same frequency.
