Start with the work the learner wants to tackle

Perhaps the learner can explain an idea aloud but finds it hard to organise a written answer. Or they understand the maths once a long question has been broken down. Tell us which subject or task matters, where the learner gets stuck and what already helps. Add the course and level if there is one.

Use a recent piece of work to make the request specific: the instructions, the learner’s attempt and the point where help was needed. For a school pupil, include relevant classroom goals or existing support recommendations. The EEF’s school-tuition guidance emphasises connecting tuition with classroom learning; this is a useful starting point for discussing private subject lessons too.

Discuss how the task could be made easier to access

Dyslexia Scotland’s guidance for teachers suggests thinking time, shorter instructions and support for organising written work. The examples below apply those ideas to a subject lesson. Discuss them with the learner and tutor as options; the useful adaptation depends on the task and the person.

A long set of instructions
Ask the tutor to give one short stage at a time, leave time to think, and invite the learner to explain what they will do first. Keep the subject question in view so the steps still lead to the intended task.
Ideas that are hard to put on paper
Discuss a simple writing frame, such as a point, supporting evidence and an explanation. Talking through or recording an answer first is another option to discuss before moving to the written task.
Feedback that feels like too much at once
Agree what the tutor is checking in this piece of work: for example, the explanation of a scientific idea. Ask them to explain a selected error with the learner and agree the next correction.

Use the introductory meeting to agree a starting point

Latimer tutors offer a free introductory meeting to discuss goals, teaching approach and arrangements. It is normally a conversation rather than a full teaching lesson. Use it to find out whether the tutor can work with the subject material and the adaptations you need.

  1. Bring the learner’s view

Explain what they want to do more comfortably and which explanations or resources they prefer. If you are enquiring for a child, include their view of what helps and what feels frustrating.

  2. Discuss the actual task

Ask how the tutor would approach the recent work you have described. Agree an initial focus, such as planning a paragraph or following the stages of a word problem, and what materials to bring.

  3. Agree what to revisit

Choose a point to discuss how the first lessons are going. Ask what work you will look at together and how the learner will give feedback on pace and clarity.

Arrange a manageable lesson pattern

Latimer provides online-first, one-to-one tuition. Microsoft Teams is the default platform; you and the tutor can agree an alternative. Discuss how both of you will see the learner’s work, whether instructions should also be written down and how the learner can ask for a pause or clarification.

Agree lesson length, frequency and any practice around the learner’s workload, concentration, goals and your budget. Each tutor sets their hourly rate, shown on their profile. Latimer invoices after lessons on a pay-as-you-go basis. Ask what the proposed pattern would cost before booking.

Review the work and the learner’s experience together

For school pupils, EEF guidance recommends checking whether an adaptation is helping the individual. A practical way to do this in tuition is to keep an early attempt and revisit a comparable task at the agreed review point. Discuss what the learner can now start, explain or correct, and where prompts are still useful.

Ask the learner whether the pace and materials helped them take part. If the same barrier remains, discuss changing the explanation, support or workload. Finishing more questions is only one observation; understanding the subject and knowing what to do next should stay part of the conversation.

When you need specialist advice before subject tuition

The offer here is subject tuition, not diagnostic assessment or therapy. If you need detailed advice on specialist dyslexia teaching, qualifications or assessment routes, use our dyslexia tutor guide before deciding what to request. In England, NHS guidance says a child’s dyslexia assessment is usually carried out by an educational psychologist or specialist teacher.

Keep that assessment question separate from the conversation about help with current subject work. A matching request or introductory meeting does not establish a tutor’s diagnostic competence.

Tell us about the subject support you need

Send the subject or task, the learner’s stage, what they find difficult and the adaptations they would like to discuss. Include practical needs such as suitable times and budget. Submitting a matching request is free.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions people ask most often.

Can I enquire for myself as an adult learner?

Yes. Describe your own subject or task, starting point and goal rather than choosing a school level that does not fit. Include any course outline or examples of the work you want help with. Discuss the tutor’s experience with comparable adult learning and the particular support you need before booking.

Can I arrange in-person lessons?

Latimer is online first. In-person tuition needs a separate agreement with the individual tutor, including location and suitable times. Mention this preference in your enquiry so it can be considered alongside the subject and learning needs.

Where can I compare specialist dyslexia providers?

Our dyslexia tutoring websites guide compares specialist directories, services and broader marketplaces. Use it for provider comparisons, and the parent guide for detailed qualification and support-route questions.
