Describe the subject support you want

Start with the part of your home-education plan that would benefit from a tutor. You might want regular help with maths reasoning, feedback on writing or teaching towards a named qualification. State what the learner is already doing so the tutor can discuss how lessons would connect with it.

The following details make an enquiry more useful than an age or year group alone. If you are unsure of the level, describe the work instead.

Subject and starting point
Name each subject you want help with, the learner’s age or stage, and the books, course or projects already in use. Choose a recent piece of work to discuss with a potential tutor.
A specific difficulty
Explain where help is needed: for example, the learner can talk through ideas but struggles to organise them into paragraphs. This gives the tutor a concrete starting point for discussing an approach.
The part you want the tutor to take on
Say whether you want new topics taught, existing work explained or feedback on independent practice. For several subjects, list the priorities separately so you can establish the fit for each.
Practical limits
Include preferred recurring slots, an approximate budget and online or in-person preferences. Mention anything that affects participation, such as needing spoken instructions backed up in writing.

Use the introduction to agree the tutor’s role

Latimer tutors offer a free introductory meeting before paid lessons. Use it to discuss the learner’s current work, the proposed subject goal and the tutor’s relevant experience with that stage of learning. It is a conversation about fit and arrangements, not normally a full teaching lesson.

Ask how the tutor would work with the resources you already use, and whether they would suggest different material for the particular gap. If you follow a child-led approach, explain how you would like subject teaching to sit alongside it. Include the learner in the discussion and ask what would help them take part comfortably.

For additional learning or communication needs, describe what works in practice and ask what the tutor can accommodate. That conversation should establish the individual tutor’s experience and limits. For broader advice on choosing support and checking suitability, use our home-school tutor guide.

Connect each lesson with the rest of the week

Agree a recurring slot and session length that leave room for the learner’s other activities and manageable practice. Include daytime preferences in your request if useful; the actual days and times need agreement with the tutor. Our home-education timetable guide covers wider routine planning.

Here is a suggested way to keep subject tuition connected to your plan. It draws on EEF guidance on targeted one-to-one tuition, which stresses identifying gaps and monitoring progress. That research concerns school interventions and does not establish a required home-education lesson schedule.

  1. Agree a starting task and goal

For the writing example, bring a recent paragraph and ask the tutor how they would help the learner organise the next one. Keep the starting work so you have something specific to revisit.

  2. Settle the handover

Ask what to practise between lessons, how materials will be shared and who will send the next attempt. Agree whether a parent will help with instructions or whether the learner will work independently, so the tutor understands how the work was completed.

  3. Review the work together

Choose a review point with the tutor. Compare a later task with the starting work and discuss the help still needed, the learner’s view and whether the session pattern remains manageable. Adjust the goal or arrangement in response.

Make the lesson format work at home

Latimer is online-first, offering one-to-one tuition. Microsoft Teams is the default lesson platform, though you and the tutor can agree another. Choose the format around the actual task and the learner’s ability to use the materials comfortably.

For one-to-one work with children, NSPCC guidance for tutors recommends another adult within earshot or the option for parents to sit in. Agree the session space, communication arrangements and how parents will receive updates before lessons begin.

Online sessions
Test the connection, sound and joining link. Check that the learner can show handwritten work and read any shared resources. Discuss breaks or a different way of presenting material if the screen setup makes participation difficult.
In-person or mixed arrangements
These need separate agreement with the tutor. Give your location and discuss travel, a suitable session space and adult presence. If some lessons will be online, agree which dates use each format and keep the same work accessible between sessions.

Budget for the recurring arrangement

Each tutor sets their hourly rate, shown on their profile. Latimer invoices after lessons on a pay-as-you-go basis. Use the agreed rate, lesson length and number of sessions to work out the cost over the period you are considering; for several subjects, total each arrangement separately.

Confirm what the lesson fee includes, whether any resources need buying and the cancellation arrangements before booking. If your budget only covers one subject regularly, name the priority in your request rather than leaving the tutor to assume that every subject needs the same amount of time. Revisit the commitment at the agreed review point.

Tell us where a tutor would fit

Use Latimer’s free matching request to describe the subject help you want within your home-education plan. Add the learner’s stage, current work, preferred lesson pattern and budget. You can also browse profiles and contact a tutor whose subject experience looks relevant.

An example enquiry might be: “We are home educating a 13-year-old and want recurring English tuition focused on organising written answers. We already use a reading programme and would like feedback on one piece of writing between lessons. Tuesday mornings are our preference; please discuss whether that arrangement is feasible.” Adapt the details to your family; the follow-up work and timetable are points to agree.

Support and clarity

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions people ask most often.

Is this a complete home-education programme?

This page is for arranging supplementary subject tuition within an existing family plan. A matching request does not book a full curriculum or full-time education package. Describe the specific teaching you need, and agree the tutor’s role alongside the learning and activities you already organise.

Do home-educated children have to use a tutor?

No tutor requirement is set out in the Department for Education’s parent guidance for England: parents may use private tutors or online tuition to help with home education. Whether to add tuition is a decision about the support your learner needs. See the DfE guidance for parents in England; rules and processes elsewhere in the UK need their own national guidance.

Can we ask for tuition towards GCSEs or A levels?

Yes, describe the subject, awarding organisation, specification and intended exam series so you can discuss the tutor’s course experience. Keep exam administration separate from the tuition request. For example, OCR requires private candidates to find an accepting centre for entry. Where an OCR qualification includes internal assessment, the centre must be willing to provide it; check OCR’s internal-assessment guidance. Request any OCR access arrangements through the centre early. Check the corresponding guidance for another awarding organisation before committing to a course.

Is private tuition the same as council-arranged education?

No. In England, DfE guidance distinguishes elective home education chosen by parents from education arranged outside school by a local authority. If a council is arranging your child’s provision, discuss the proposed tuition with the responsible team. Do not treat a private matching request as confirmation of council funding or an agreed provision package. The distinction here is England-specific; use the relevant national and local guidance for your situation.

Can the tutor give us feedback between sessions?

Discuss the form and frequency of feedback before booking: a short update on the lesson, comments on a piece of work or a practice task for the next meeting may meet different needs. Ask what is included in the arrangement and where it will be shared. NSPCC guidance recommends keeping session notes and updating parents or carers about how learning went; agree how that will work with your tutor.
