Check the course and paper before choosing revision tasks

Edexcel’s separate Chemistry GCSE has two papers. Both assess Topic 1, so atomic structure, bonding and quantitative skills remain useful throughout revision. Use the course code and tier on school materials to choose the right practice questions.

The separate course adds work such as acid–alkali titration and identifying ions. In the specification, a C suffix means separate-Chemistry content; bold text marks Higher-only content. These are different distinctions, so check both when choosing tasks.

Paper 1
Topics 1–5: key concepts; states of matter and mixtures; chemical changes; extracting metals and equilibria; separate chemistry 1.
Paper 2
Topic 1 plus Topics 6–9: groups in the periodic table; rates and energy changes; fuels and Earth science; separate chemistry 2.
Length and weighting
Each paper lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, carries 100 marks and contributes 50% of the qualification.
Foundation and Higher
Both papers must be taken at the same tier. Foundation offers grades 1–5; Higher offers grades 4–9, with a possible grade 3 just below the grade 4 boundary.
What answers need to show
Around 40% of the marks assess knowledge and understanding, 40% application, and 20% analysis and evaluation. These are assessment objectives AO1, AO2 and AO3.
Maths and practical work
At least 20% of marks assess mathematical skills and at least 15% assess practical skills. These can overlap: a calculation may use experimental results.

Balancing equations: change the numbers, keep the substances

A learner may understand that magnesium reacts with oxygen but struggle to represent it. This illustrative example starts with:

Mg + O₂ → MgO

Mg means magnesium, O₂ is an oxygen molecule containing two oxygen atoms, and MgO is magnesium oxide. The left side has two oxygen atoms; the right side has only one. Writing MgO₂ would change the formula of the product instead of balancing the reaction.

Put 2 before MgO to give two oxygen atoms on the right. That also gives two magnesium atoms there, so put 2 before Mg on the left:

2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO

Now each side contains two magnesium atoms and two oxygen atoms. The large numbers multiply the whole formula that follows them; the small number inside O₂ belongs to the formula itself.

A useful follow-up is to balance hydrogen reacting with chlorine: H₂ + Cl₂ → HCl, where HCl is hydrogen chloride. The balanced equation is H₂ + Cl₂ → 2HCl. Ask the learner to explain why the 2 belongs before HCl. Being able to justify that choice shows more than copying a finished equation.

Higher-tier example: turning a mass into an amount in moles

Edexcel places the mole content in specification points 1.50–1.53 at Higher tier. Foundation learners still need calculations such as relative formula mass, reacting masses and concentration in g/dm³; their plan should follow the relevant specification statements.

For a constructed Higher-tier question, suppose a sample contains 5.6 g of iron, and iron’s relative atomic mass is 56. One mole of iron has a mass of 56 g, so:

amount in moles = mass in grams ÷ molar mass in grams per mole

5.6 ÷ 56 = 0.10 mol

Multiplying 5.6 by 56 would miss the relationship: 5.6 g is one tenth of the mass of one mole, so the sample must contain one tenth of a mole. Keeping the unit, mol, makes clear what the answer represents.

Try 11.2 g of iron with the same molar mass: 11.2 ÷ 56 = 0.20 mol. The mass and the amount have both doubled. A tutor can then check whether the learner can select the relationship without a prompt before moving to calculations involving balanced equations.

Practical questions: explain what the gas measurements show

Edexcel core practical 7.1 includes measuring gas from marble chips reacting with hydrochloric acid. The qualification includes eight core practicals; lessons can help learners interpret methods and results, while practical completion is arranged through the school or examination centre.

Consider these invented results for a practice question. Two runs use the same mass and size of marble chips, the same temperature and the same volume of acid. Only the acid concentration changes. Starting from zero, a gas syringe collects 30 cm³ of carbon dioxide in the first 20 seconds in run A and 60 cm³ in run B, which uses the higher concentration.

The mean rates over those 20 seconds are 30 ÷ 20 = 1.5 cm³/s and 60 ÷ 20 = 3.0 cm³/s. Saying “B makes more gas” is incomplete: the comparison concerns gas produced in the same time, not the final amount after both reactions finish.

A clearer explanation is: “B has a higher mean rate over the first 20 seconds. More reacting particles in each unit of solution give more frequent collisions with the marble surface.” This does not mean concentration makes particles move faster; temperature has been kept constant.

To evaluate the method, identify a specific problem. Gas escaping before the apparatus is sealed would make the measured volume too low. Explaining that effect is more useful than writing “human error”.

Turn a marked question into the next lesson

Bring the question, the learner’s uncorrected answer and any teacher feedback. A topic name such as “electrolysis” is less informative than seeing whether the difficulty lies in ions, electrode products, observations or a calculation. The following is a suggested routine to agree with a tutor.

  • For ongoing Year 10 support, build a manageable rhythm around the topics currently taught at school.
  • Before a mock or a short deadline, prioritise repeated errors and assessed topics, then add timed practice once the method is understood.
  • Agree the frequency around schoolwork, time for independent practice and budget; review it as the learner’s needs change.
  1. Find the first uncertain step

    Ask the learner to talk through an attempt. Distinguish a missing chemistry idea from a unit conversion, an unclear command word or a method copied without understanding.

  2. Model a correction, then remove the prompt

    Work through one example and try a related question independently. For a calculation, keep the relationship, substitution and unit visible before checking the answer.

  3. Use practice to choose the next priority

    Between lessons, attempt a short set of suitable questions and record the error and its correction. Return to a similar question later; needing fewer prompts is a practical sign of progress.

Choose the teaching approach as carefully as the subject

Use a free introductory meeting to discuss goals, approach and arrangements. It is an introduction rather than a full free teaching lesson. Show a piece of schoolwork and ask how the tutor would help the learner move beyond that particular difficulty.

  • Edexcel course experience

    Ask about recent work with 1CH0, the relevant tier, and the separate-chemistry topics. A useful discussion connects that experience to the learner’s actual questions.

  • Pace and communication

    If dense questions are difficult, discuss reading them in short parts, labelling diagrams and explaining terms such as ion or concentration before using them in an answer.

  • Confidence and independence

    For a learner reluctant to attempt questions, agree an unhurried first attempt and a way to ask for hints. For a confident learner, ask for unfamiliar applications and explanations of why an answer is valid.

Arrange online lessons and a workable budget

Is this the same course as Edexcel Combined Science or International GCSE Chemistry?

No. This page focuses on the separate GCSE Chemistry qualification, 1CH0. Edexcel Combined Science and International GCSE Chemistry are different qualifications, so use the title and code on the learner’s school materials when requesting help. Similar topic names do not make their paper structures or content interchangeable.

Where should I find Edexcel Chemistry past papers?

Use Pearson’s GCSE Chemistry course page and its course materials. Choose the correct qualification, paper and tier, and use the matching mark scheme after an independent attempt. Keep a note of the specific error to revisit; a total mark alone gives little direction for the next practice task.

What if the learner needs a slower pace or finds scientific language difficult?

Describe what makes the work difficult and what already helps at school. For example, ask for a diagram beside a written explanation, one calculation step at a time, or a short explanation of unfamiliar vocabulary. Discuss any specific learning needs and relevant experience with the tutor before agreeing the approach.

Can tuition help with the move towards A-level Chemistry?

GCSE work on formulae, bonding and quantitative reasoning provides a useful starting point for further Chemistry study.
