Postgraduate tutors for your next study task

Postgraduate study is not one uniform syllabus. Your programme handbook, module brief and marking criteria are the starting points for tuition; the support you need depends on what you are being asked to understand or demonstrate. These route distinctions follow QAA’s master’s degree statement and doctoral degree statement.

Consider two fictional studies about recorded seminars. Study A interviews part-time master’s students who say recordings help them revisit difficult ideas. Study B compares module marks before and after recordings were introduced and finds similar marks.

A weak summary says: “Study A shows recordings work, but Study B shows they do not.” That treats students’ reported experience and assessment marks as the same outcome. It also overlooks whether the groups studied before and after were comparable.

A more careful synthesis would be: “The interview study suggests that students value recordings for revisiting difficult material. The comparison of module marks does not show a corresponding improvement in assessed performance. Because the studies examine different outcomes, their findings need not conflict; neither establishes that recordings caused better understanding.”

The improvement comes from connecting each conclusion to its evidence, comparing the methods and stating a limit. For independent practice, take two papers from your own reading and write one paragraph linking their findings. Identify what each actually measured before deciding whether they agree. This is the kind of reasoning to practise with a tutor; the example is not a model answer for an assessed assignment. Here is a second fictional example. “Does online learning work?” is too broad to guide a small research project: it leaves the learners, activity and meaning of “work” undefined.

Before using private tuition for assessed work, check your university’s rules with the module leader or supervisor. Permission to receive teaching does not automatically permit external editing, feedback on a live assessment or help with analysis.

Proofreading rules show why this matters. Swansea’s policy prohibits professional proofreading for taught students unless specifically approved, including for defined reasonable adjustments. Its research-student rules permit limited proofreading and require supervisor notification when the thesis is submitted. Bristol’s research-degree rules exclude a proofreader from producing text, suggesting ideas or arguments, or commenting on dissertation structure. These are university-specific examples: establish the rules for your own course and type of help.

Subject explanations and practice on separate examples can develop the skills you need. Keep authorship of submitted text, analysis, code and arguments, and acknowledge assistance as required.

Agree the boundary before sharing a draft. Your university remains responsible for formal supervision, project approval and research ethics. Use dummy or suitably anonymised material for methods practice; do not share participant records or confidential work without the necessary permission.

A relevant qualification is useful context, but ask how the tutor would teach the particular concept, method or kind of reasoning you find difficult. A free introductory meeting lets you discuss goals, approach and arrangements before agreeing paid lessons.
