Qualified teacher status, a PGCE and teaching experience describe different things. Learn what each tells you and which evidence to request when reading a tutor’s profile.

QTS, a PGCE and teaching experience

Read the full name of the status or qualification a tutor holds. These labels answer different questions, so a profile’s education history needs to be considered alongside its teaching history.

Qualified teacher status (QTS)
In England, QTS is required for teaching in maintained schools and non-maintained special schools, with some exceptions. The Teachers’ Standards set out the expected professional practice and conduct. QTS is a starting point for checking teaching background.
Postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE)
A PGCE is an academic qualification in education. Courses can award QTS alone, QTS with a PGCE, or a PGCE without QTS. A PGCE on a profile therefore does not, by itself, confirm QTS; a teacher can also hold QTS without a PGCE.
Relevant teaching experience
Ask which subjects and age groups the tutor has taught recently. Primary and secondary training routes are different, and a tutor’s subsequent experience matters when judging whether they can help with the learner’s current work.

Ask for evidence of the named status

Ask which teaching status the tutor holds and where it was awarded. For QTS in England, ask to see the tutor’s QTS certificate: teachers can download their own certificate through the DfE’s Access your teaching qualifications service.

Request a relevant teaching history and references as well. Essex County Council’s guidance for families choosing private tuition recommends asking for qualification or training evidence, a CV and references. Read these together: evidence of a status and evidence of recent work with similar learners serve different purposes.

Use a simple record of the claim, the document shown and any question still unanswered. A certificate can establish the named award; a CV or reference helps you understand when and where the person has taught. Do not substitute one for the other.

What the credential does not decide

QTS does not identify the best tutor for a particular learner. Check recent subject and age-group experience and ask how the tutor would explain the difficulty. Once the named status is clear, use our QTS tutor selection guide to compare teaching approaches.

Keep teacher status and safeguarding checks separate

For tuition involving a child, request the relevant teaching evidence alongside the information needed for a safeguarding decision. A teaching-status document is not a substitute for references, appropriate checks or clear lesson and communication arrangements. Compare the cost of the arrangement

Latimer tutors set the hourly rate shown on each profile. Before booking, agree lesson length, frequency and cancellation arrangements; lessons are invoiced afterwards on a pay-as-you-go basis. A qualification label alone does not explain the cost or teaching included.

Straight answers to the questions people ask most often.

Does a private tutor have to hold QTS?

In England, private tutors are not legally required to be qualified teachers, as Essex County Council’s private-tuition guidance explains. The QTS requirements for particular school teaching roles are a separate matter. You can still make QTS a preference when choosing tuition and ask for evidence of it, alongside relevant teaching experience.

Is QTS the same across the UK?

The nations have different arrangements for school teaching. In Wales, the Education Workforce Council awards QTS, and registration in the school-teacher category is also required for teaching in maintained and non-maintained special schools. Teachers in Scottish schools must register with GTCS; teachers in Northern Ireland’s grant-aided schools must register with GTCNI. Ask for the exact status or registration claimed. For Scottish registration, the GTCS public register guidance explains how to check the category and whether registration is full or provisional.

Does QTS show that a tutor is a specialist in additional learning needs?

QTS alone should not be treated as proof of expertise in a particular need. England’s Teachers’ Standards expect teachers to respond to pupils’ strengths and needs, but you still need to ask about the individual tutor’s relevant experience. Describe what the learner finds difficult and what already helps, then ask what specific adjustment the tutor would propose. For example, discuss how they would change the pace or presentation of a task.

Can lessons be online or in person?

Latimer is built around online one-to-one tuition. Microsoft Teams is the default platform, though the tutor and learner can agree another platform. In-person lessons depend on a separate agreement where the tutor and learner are close enough; discuss that requirement before booking. For online lessons, agree how the learner will share their work and which materials to have ready.
