What do you need a tutoring platform to do?

Separate the help you need finding a tutor from the tools used during lessons. A provider may combine several functions, so check what its service includes.

Find and compare tutors: Look for enough information to compare experience with your goal, teaching approach and price. Browsing suits readers who want to investigate profiles themselves; a matching request lets you describe a need that is harder to capture in a search.
Arrange the tuition: Establish who agrees lesson times, handles payment and helps with questions or problems. With Latimer, you arrange lessons directly with the tutor after an introduction, and Latimer invoices after lessons.
Take part in the lesson: Meeting software provides the online setting. Check how the learner will see material, show their own work and receive feedback. A familiar video-call app is only one part of that teaching arrangement.

Choose the teaching as well as the technology

Use a tutor’s profile to prepare specific questions about the learner’s starting point. Relevant experience should connect to the support you need, whether that means understanding a difficult topic, practising a skill or working towards an assessment.

Explain what the learner can already do and where they get stuck. Ask how the tutor would identify the first priority and what relevant experience they bring to that goal.
Active participation
Ask how the learner will attempt work, explain their thinking and get feedback. Decide how the tutor will see a written answer, hear a response or review a practical task in the intended setup.

Try the setup with a small sample task

Imagine a learner who can join a video call on a tablet but cannot comfortably read a shared worksheet while answering questions. Before arranging regular lessons, agree a short setup check using a sample resource on the device they will actually use.

Open the resource, make the text readable and try giving an answer while staying in contact with the tutor. Can the tutor follow the response, and can the learner understand the feedback? If switching between windows gets in the way, try a file sent beforehand, a paper copy or another agreed way of sharing the work. Choose the arrangement that lets the learner take part comfortably.

Use a sample without private information; keep passwords and account details out of shared work. On a school- or work-managed device, check permitted installations and account access with its owner or administrator. Test the intended meeting link as well as the microphone and camera. A teaching activity should be agreed with the tutor separately from the usual introductory conversation.

Compare the ongoing cost and commitment

Check what the payment covers: Ask whether the quotation includes the resources you need and whether any separate service charges or paid materials apply. Check when payment is due.
Understand changes to the plan: Read the cancellation and rescheduling terms before booking. Ask what happens if the learner is ill or cannot join because of a technical problem, and how to discuss changing tutor.

When choosing a platform for a child

Ask how to raise a concern, what contact takes place outside lessons and how the child’s information is handled. Read the provider’s safeguarding information alongside the individual tutor’s profile.

For parents in England, the Department for Education’s guidance on tuition and other out-of-school activities recommends asking about child protection, complaints and staff suitability checks. It also advises explaining the child’s needs and understanding what a provider can and cannot support. Use those questions to understand the proposed arrangement; a software feature alone cannot answer them.

Do I need to install an app or create an account?

For Teams on a desktop computer, Microsoft documents a browser route using Edge or Chrome without installing the app. Some meetings still require email verification or an account because of organiser settings; mobile joining instructions differ. School or work accounts can also restrict access to external meetings. Check the intended link on your own device before the lesson. See Microsoft’s joining guidance.

Can I rely on captions or a transcript?

Check the actual lesson setup with the tutor if captions or a lasting text record are essential. Teams offers live captions, but administrators can disable them and translated captions have additional licence conditions. Live captions are not saved as a transcript. Agree how you will receive any notes or accessible materials you need; see Microsoft’s caption guidance.

Will I receive a recording of the lesson?

Ask the tutor before booking if a recording matters to you. Teams recording depends on settings and participant permissions, and recordings must be explicitly shared with external attendees. Using Teams does not mean a lesson will automatically be recorded or that you will receive a copy. Agree any proposed recording and access arrangements in advance. What if I need in-person tuition?

Latimer’s service is built around online one-to-one lessons. In-person tuition needs a separate arrangement with a suitably located tutor. If meeting in person is essential, include the location and travel limits in your enquiry and confirm the arrangement with the tutor before booking.
