Eduqas’s final-assessment notice confirms that its GCSE French course has ended. If an old workbook or search result still names Eduqas, ask the school or exam centre for the current awarding body, specification code and exam year before planning revision. Tutoring enquiries here are for French learning support; exam entry needs to be discussed with an exam centre.

In England, current options include AQA GCSE French 8652 and Pearson Edexcel GCSE French 1FR1, both first assessed or certified in 2026. The learner’s actual entry determines which specification to follow.

Preparing for a current GCSE
Use the correct board’s specification and sample assessments to identify the tasks to practise. AQA 8652 and Pearson 1FR1 include reading aloud and dictation: speaking an unfamiliar passage and writing down spoken French need practice as well as conversation and comprehension.
Rebuilding French with older materials
Select a short extract or a few sentences that address a known difficulty, such as understanding a negative or describing a completed event. Keep useful vocabulary and grammar practice, then use current-board material when checking exam readiness.

What the former Eduqas course covered

The former Eduqas award assessed listening, speaking, reading and writing, each worth 25%. This outline helps identify the purpose of an older resource. Its tasks and marks describe the ended qualification.

Older Foundation work still involved different time frames, including present, perfect and immediate future forms. Higher writing required more complex extended work. Choose practice for the learner’s demonstrated need rather than assuming Foundation means present tense only.

Listening: Understand spoken French and preserve details such as a negative, time or opinion when answering.
Speaking: The assessment used a role-play, a photo-card discussion and a conversation. A concise response can fulfil a role-play request; a conversation may need relevant development and follow-up.
Reading: Interpret French texts, with French-to-English translation included in the former paper.
Writing: Communicate in French and translate from English into French. The tense needs to fit the intended event, and a translation needs to preserve the original meaning.

A writing example: make the verb match last weekend

Eduqas’s 2024 examiner report highlighted matching the tense to the writing prompt. Here is a constructed practice example for a completed past event, rather than an official exam answer.

Prompt: Describe something you did last weekend.

Starting answer: “Le week-end dernier, je joue au foot.” Literally: “Last weekend, I play football.”

The time phrase tells us when the event happened, but je joue is the present form. For the intended completed event, change the verb to j’ai joué: ai is the helping verb and joué is the past participle. Keep the accent on é.

Corrected answer: “Le week-end dernier, j’ai joué au foot.” This means “Last weekend, I played football.” The verb now expresses the completed past event.

For a short follow-up, change the sport: “Le week-end dernier, j’ai joué au tennis” means “Last weekend, I played tennis.” Then contrast it with the present habit “Je joue au tennis” — “I play tennis.” Ask the learner to choose the form for each meaning without looking at the model. That checks whether they can reuse the distinction, rather than copy the correction.

A comprehension example: notice “never”

Missing a negative can reverse an answer even when the vocabulary is familiar. Eduqas’s 2024 examiner report identified listening negatives as an area needing attention. Try this constructed sentence as reading practice first, then have it read aloud without showing the text.

French: “Je ne joue jamais au tennis, mais j’aime le foot.”

Meaning: “I never play tennis, but I like football.”

If the question asks which sport the speaker never plays, the answer is tennis. Recognising the two sports is only the start: ne…jamais, around joue, gives the meaning “never play”. Mais means “but” and introduces a different statement. Liking football does not tell us whether the speaker plays it.

Compare “Je ne joue pas au tennis” — “I do not play tennis.” Changing pas to jamais gives the more specific meaning “never”. A good answer preserves that detail.

For a fresh listening check, use “Je ne joue jamais au football” — “I never play football.” Let the learner identify the sport and the negative meaning before seeing the transcript. If they understand the written version but miss it aloud, make recognising that spoken phrase the next practice target.

Choose a starting point for tuition

The first priority should come from a recent independent answer or school feedback. The examples below suggest ways to organise support; the tutor and learner can adapt them to the actual course and available time.

Catching up with schoolwork
If short sentences are difficult to build, start with a small set of verbs and familiar vocabulary. Practise changing the subject or time frame before attempting a whole extended answer.
Preparing after a mock
Separate missing knowledge from a misunderstood question or an answer left unfinished. Select a task from the current board that tests that weakness, then revisit it with different wording before attempting another full paper.
Speaking with fewer prompts
Begin with one manageable question and allow rehearsal. Then change a detail or ask a related follow-up so the learner has to respond to meaning. Agree how quickly written support should be reduced, especially if reading and speaking at once feels demanding.

A manageable lesson and practice cycle

Agree a rhythm that fits schoolwork, the next assessment and the family’s budget. A focused block can address one gap; ongoing lessons can revisit skills across the course. Use a cycle like this to decide what still needs help, rather than setting a fixed lesson count.

Start with an independent attempt
Keep a short writing sample, a recorded spoken answer or the answers to a listening extract. Identify the specific difficulty: choosing a past form, hearing a negative or understanding what the question asks.
Explain and practise one change
Work through a correction and ask the learner to explain it in their own words. For listening, compare the transcript with what they heard; for writing, make the changed verb or missing meaning visible.
Return to a different example
Practise a small task between lessons, then try a new sentence or extract without the model. Note whether the learner can select the tense, retain the negative or respond to the follow-up independently.

What an old past-paper score can tell you

Eduqas’s older listening and reading walkthroughs provide audio-supported past-paper practice at both tiers. Select the parts that match the language skill being practised, then return to the actual current specification for exam-format preparation.

A percentage on an old paper is useful feedback on that particular task. It does not provide a reliable predicted grade for a reformed qualification. Ofqual explains that grade boundaries are set after exams to reflect the difficulty of the papers. Use the relevant qualification and series when interpreting a past mark. Record the errors and the corrections you can now make, and use current school assessment evidence when discussing progress.

Straight answers to the questions people ask most often.

Is WJEC French in Wales the same as the withdrawn Eduqas course?

No. WJEC’s qualifications for Wales follow a separate qualification timetable, including a GCSE French course taught from 2025. The Eduqas final-assessment notice does not mean that WJEC French in Wales ended at the same time. Ask the school for the exact qualification before choosing a specification or past papers.

What if the school has not confirmed Foundation or Higher tier?

Tell the tutor that the tier is undecided and bring recent school feedback. Work can begin on the vocabulary, sentence construction and comprehension difficulties already visible. Once the school confirms the tier, use the corresponding tasks and demands from the learner’s current board. A tutor can discuss the learner’s work with you; the school or exam centre is the place to confirm the entry.

Can a parent help with French practice without speaking French?

Yes. Use a short task with an answer or translation supplied by the tutor. For the past-time example above, ask the learner why j’ai joué is used and then ask them to change football to tennis. Check against the model afterwards. For pronunciation, use the tutor’s feedback or an appropriate audio model rather than guessing how unfamiliar French should sound.

Can the work also support further French study?

If further French study is the goal, discuss the next course with its provider and check its entry requirements. Secure grammar, understanding spoken French and expressing ideas independently are useful priorities to bring to tuition. A GCSE course or a tutoring arrangement does not itself guarantee admission to a sixth-form course.
